Pharmacy Research Excellence Day

The 16th Annual Louis C. Littlefield Celebrating Pharmacy Research Excellence (Research Day) event is sponsored by the Col- lege of Pharmacy (COP) during the university’s research week. This event is free and open to the public. It highlights the research accomplishments of all researchers associated with the COP including undergraduates, Pharm.D. students, honor students, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, residents and faculty.

Keynote Lecture
Dr. Thomas Meek, PhD, Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, Texas A & M University
Dr. Meek’s academic research has been focused on  inhibitor design and mechanistic elucidation of numerous therapeutically relevant enzymes, most extensively proteases from human pathogens. Before his appointment at Texas A&M, Dr. Meek was vice-president of Assay Development and Compound Profiling at Glaxo Smith Klein and responsible for strategic development and implementation of assay development and all high-throughput screening and compound management activities and infrastructure for GSK world-wide.   He is author of >60 publications and currently a professor in the Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics.    
Distinguished Faculty Lecture
Dr. Karen L. Rascati, RPh., Ph.D., Professor, Health Outcomes Division
Dr. Rascati is the Eckerd/Turley Centennial Professor of Pharmacy and Graduate Advisor for The University of Texas College of Pharmacy. Dr. Rascati is an international recognized expert in Pharmacoeconomics. Her textbook, “Essentials of Pharmacoeconomics,” now in its third edition, is used in many countries and in the majority of US Colleges of Pharmacy. Her research expertise is focused on economic and outcomes evaluations for several disease states as well as for pharmacy services.

Hanxi Molly Zhang – Biogen award

Congratulations to Molly Zhang, who was selected for the Biogen Real World Evidence Strategy Co-op. Thanks also to Som Ghosh who provided mentorship and guidance.


Shiyu Serene Zhang – Best Poster award

Shiyu Serene Zhang — Recipient of the AMCP Foundation Best Poster Award in the Graduate Student category for her work, O2: Progesterone (17-alpha hydroxyprogesterone caproate) utilization and adherence in women with a high-risk pregnancy: a study of two databases.


Songyeon Ahn wins the American College of Toxicology’s North American Graduate Fellowship for two years, beginning in 2019.

Her abstract entitled “Obesity and prostate cancer progression: Role of the chemokine CXCL12” has been approved for presentation at the American College of Toxicology’s 40th Annual Meeting and you have been accepted to receive a North American Graduate Fellowship. She will be recognized at the Awards Ceremony and Luncheon on Monday, November 18, 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm during the ACT Annual Meeting in Phoenix, Arizona.

Working at the World Health Organization (WHO) this summer, I will have the opportunity to participate in the preparation for the annual SAGE (Strategic Advisory Group of Experts) meeting by preparing documents that elucidate ways to overcome the barriers and limitations to uptake and coverage of new vaccines, like the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine.
