Faculty Advisor: Lei Zhang

Lei Zhang is the faculty advisor to UT Law’s Asian Pacific American Law Student Association. He is Tarlton Law Library’s Student Services Coordinator and teaches Advanced Legal Research: Corporations/Securities. He has been at UT Law since Summer 2015.

Lei graduated from UC Berkeley with a Bachelor’s Degree in History. He later received his Master’s in Library and Information Science from UCLA and his JD from Duke University School of Law. Before he began his career as a law librarian, he practiced law for several years in Los Angeles, both as a public interest attorney focusing on immigration and family law and as a corporate associate focusing on capital markets and M&A.

Lei has a few interests outside of law. He’s a recovering collector of vinyl records. Back in his college days, he was a sometimes radio dj at the campus station (KALX 90.7 FM). Before moving to Austin, he board gamed avidly, but with his gaming group still in California, he can now only solo Arkham Horror campaigns. He feels guilty about not reading more, but there’s a video game backlog to get through. Next up, Ghost Trick Phantom Detective. His most controversial opinion is that sabermetrics has made baseball more enjoyable. And now for the parade of favorites: band (The Clash), director (Billy Wilder), tv theme song (Valerie/The Hogan Family), ice cream flavor (cookies ‘n cream).

Lei is honored to be APALSA’s faculty advisor. He hasn’t forgotten what it’s like to be a law student, having to juggle coursework and career preparation with those activities that bring us joy. He’s here to do what he can to support all UT Law students in their academic and professional goals. And if he can help relieve some of their stress, all the better.
