2012-2013 Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship Competition

The highly competitive Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship is funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The fellowship assists meritorious graduate students undergoing intensive training in modern languages and related area or international studies.

Academic Year Awards – for Graduate Students Only

The academic year FLAS fellowship provides a $15,000 annual stipend and pays for tuition and required fees (up to a maximum of 9 credit hours). During the fellowship period, FLAS recipients must be enrolled in at least three hours of language instruction and at least one relevant area studies course during each long semester. Both courses must be taken on a letter-grade basis.

International Travel

In order to support all students traveling to international locations, UT’s International Office has put into place a new travel policy. All enrolled undergraduate, graduate and professional students participating in activities or events abroad (whether required or optional) must obtain authorization to travel abroad. Please go to the Study Abroad website (link provided below) for information on the steps you must take to comply with this policy before your travel.

New Online Travel Workshop

The Study Abroad Office is pleased to announce that UT students traveling internationally for academic and UT sponsored activities, outside the scope of an organized study abroad program, will no longer be required to attend an in-person travel workshop as part of their pre-departure requirements.  They may instead view the new Online Travel Workshop prior to departure.

As a reminder, the UT Student Travel Policy for International Locations requires UT students participating in the following activities abroad to register their travel with the UT Study Abroad Office prior to departure:

  • trips organized and/or sponsored by The University of Texas at Austin that are part of or contribute to an academic course or degree program including internships, practicum, and research;
  • academic-related international service learning, internships, practicum, research, and volunteer opportunities organized and/or sponsored by the University of Texas at Austin;
  • travel by members of a registered student organization regardless of whether or not the organization requires its student members to attend the activity or event;
  • other trips organized and/or sponsored by The University of Texas at Austin including the activities of sponsored student organizations;
  • travel to meetings of academic-related, professional associations including conferences.

Please note that students participating in official Study Abroad Programs, Social Work Field Placements and Architecture Professional Residency opportunities are not required to complete the International Travel Authorization requirements and should instead complete an application to study abroad. See the “How to Apply ” section of the Study Abroad Office website for details.
