Student Ambassador Opportunity at US Pavilion, Korea Expo Summer 2012

The University of Virginia is inviting student applications to a unique experience of serving as Student Ambassadors for the USA Pavilion at the “Living Ocean and Coast” Expo hosted by the Republic of Korea. Student ambassadors will act as the face of the United States and will interact directly with visitors as well as with Pavilion staff, partners, government officials, and dignitaries. They will rotate positions within the Pavilion throughout the Expo (such as greeters, admin support, protocol support, sponsor/marketing coordination and programming support) and will be supervised by the Director of the Student Ambassador Program, who will be on site throughout the Expo along with the USA Pavilion Management team.

Expo 2012 runs from May 12th to August 12th, 2012.

Student Ambassadors will serve throughout the duration of the Expo, with an additional 10 days of orientation and training prior to the opening date of May 12, 2012. Official Expo hours are 9:30am to 9:30pm, and Student Ambassadors will be on a 4 days on/3 off work schedule (subject to change), with the maximum working shift of 8 hours within the hours of 8am and 11pm.

Minimum requirements: U.S. citizen or permanent resident; current college undergraduate or graduate student, or recent graduate (no earlier than December 2011); Korean language proficiency (ACTFL “Novice High” or better); experience in public relations, well developed interpersonal skills and a positive outlook on social and cultural diversity.

Familiarity with Expo theme is advantageous.

Selected program participants will be provided roundtrip travel to Yeosu, Korea, housing, a meal stipend, and college credit via an accompanying online course.

Application deadline: February 10, 2012.

TUSA Summer Mandarin and Culture Study Abroad Scholarship Program

The TUSA Ambassador Summer Scholarship Program is being offered again this year to U.S. college and university students who are interested in studying the Mandarin Chinese language during the months of July and August. The scholarship covers tuition, dormitory fees, four excursions and incidental insurance. Meals are not included and students must provide their own airfare to and from Taiwan. Accepted students will study at the National Pingtung University of Education in Taiwan.

The TUSA program starts July 2nd and ends August 31, 2012. The program is sponsored by the Ministry of Education in Taiwan, and a total of 36 Ambassador students will be accepted for the 2012 class.

In addition to studying at a first-rate university, students learn about Taiwanese culture and will visit several interesting sites to become more familiar with Taiwan and her people.  The program has been created with special focus on students without Chinese/Taiwanese heritage, so prior knowledge or experience with the Mandarin language is not needed.  Each U.S. student is paired with a Taiwanese study partner to assist in the language and cultural study program.

The application period is 1 January 2012 to 31 March 2012. Completed applications received prior to 15 February 2012 will be reviewed for early acceptance and reported to the applicant within seven days of that date.  All remaining applications, including those not awarded early admission, will be reviewed and reported by 7 April 2012. Please  apply online (and submit recommendation letters) at: www.taiwanusalliance.com.

The application period for early acceptance is January 1, 2012 to February 15, 2012 (acceptance notified by Feb. 22, 2012.)

IMPORTANT NOTE:  UT will not get any guaranteed slots this year, so please apply directly  online with the TUSA committee for the national competition.
