On October 29th, the Council of Graduate Chemists and friends participated in Thinkery 21’s “Murder at the Museum” night. Participants visited booths and tables, did activities, and used information from each booth to solve a fake murder. There were food trucks and a cash bar in addition to a DJ. Proceeds from tickets sold for the event fund the non-profit Thinkery children’s museum. The volunteers from CGC were responsible for designing and working three booths focusing on blood typing, chemical analysis with paper chromatography, and the science of luminol. These tables, in conjunction with tables hosted by the local branch of the FBI, UT Geology, UT Psychology and other groups, each had a clue needed to solve the murder. Thinkery 21 events are hosted on Thursday nights every few months and feature different themes. Past examples include “inkery” and “pantone-monium”. The next Thinkery 21 event will be themed around superheroes, and will take place on January 14th 2016.
