CGC Officers were guest presenters at the “Tinkering with Color and Light” themed Thinkery Summer Camps on June 12, July 3, July 10, and July 31 this past summer. Kids from first through fifth grade were encouraged to use sunlight, renewable fuels, electricity, and science to power their world for decades to come!
Welcome to the CSSO!
We would like to officially welcome the Chemistry Student Safety Organization (CSSO), which is a new organization open to undergraduate and graduate students in chemistry! The goal of this organization is to improve the overall safety culture in chemistry research laboratories at UT Austin by stimulating student involvement in safety activities and spreading awareness of good safety practices. Founding members and current officers include: Kanchan Aggarwal, Eric Sikma, Juliette Strasser, Jonathan Thompson, Audrey Fikes, Adrian Rylski, Calla McCulley, Stephanie Liu, and Elva Ye (undergraduate).
Some of the members of this organization attended the ExxonMobil Partners in Academic Laboratory (PALS) Safety workshop in Baytown this summer. Here they are pictured following their workshop presentation on the surveyed safety culture within our UT Chemistry Department. CGC would like to say congratulations for registering your organization – we are looking forward to the safety activities that will begin in the Fall semester from this group!

Fun with Chemistry 2019!
CGC volunteers helped with the Scavenger Hunt sessions for the Fun With Chemistry Physical vs. Chemical Change Day Camp on June 10, 2019. Demos included: Dry Ice Bubbles, Elephant Toothpaste, Genie in a Bottle, Luminol, Flame tests, and the van de Graaff generator. Fourth grade students worked in teams to tackle chemistry questions and solve chemistry clues to allow them to move through the different scavenger hunt rooms.
