Presentation: Unconscious Bias: Are we Treating All Patients Fairly and Equitably?
René Salazar, MD, is a board-certified internal medicine physician in UT Health Austin’s Primary Care Clinic. Additionally, Dr. Salazar is a professor in both the Dell Medical School Department of Medical Education and the Dell Medical School Department of Internal Medicine. He also serves as the Assistant Dean for Diversity for the Dell Medical School Department of Medical Education.
Dr. Salazar earned his medical degree from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He completed both an internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of California, San Francisco as well as a research fellowship focusing on Latino health disparities that was supported by the University of California, San Francisco Division of General Internal Medicine and Medical Effectiveness Research Center for Diverse Populations. He was a faculty member in the Division of General Internal Medicine, where he maintained a busy clinical practice for over a decade.
Dr. Salazar has over ten years of experience supporting diversity and promoting an inclusive climate. As the chair of the University of California, San Francisco Department of Medicine’s Residency Diversity Committee and the Director of Diversity for the Office of Graduate Medical Education, he led efforts to recruit diverse residents and clinical fellows. While at University of California, San Francisco, he helped develop a campus-wide unconscious bias educational initiative to increase awareness and provide skills to address unconscious bias among faculty, staff, students, and trainees. He has presented his work at national meetings, including the Association of American Medical Colleges, the Society of General Internal Medicine, and the Society of Hospital Medicine. His work has also been featured on National Public Radio (NPR).
