Graduate Program: MA in Russian Studies (U of Colorado)

The Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Colorado, Boulder invites applications for its interdisciplinary MA program in Russian Studies. This year the University of Colorado will have a few TAships (with tuition remission and stipend) available, and they also offer other forms of financial aid, including partial scholarships. Applicants should submit their materials online by 10 January, 2018.

The program combines intensive, advanced study of the Russian language with cultural literacy, based upon historical and theoretical analysis of cultural and socio-political developments in contemporary Russia. Students have the opportunity to design their own course of study in close consultation with faculty. Thesis, non-thesis, and native-speaker tracks are available, with or without study abroad; accelerated timelines are optional. Some Russian MA students receive a teaching assistantship and tuition waiver for two years; others will be eligible for partial merit- and/or need-based funding.

Program Strengths:

  • Emphasis on cultural studies, including contemporary Russia;
  • Slavic folklore (contemporary), ethnography and anthropology;
  • Gender studies;
  • Minority studies and nationalism;
  • Film and TV studies;
  • Sociolinguistics;
  • Russian language training (the department offers several courses appropriate for advanced students);
  • TAships (even students who don’t yet have the Russian skills to teach Russian can apply – we can assign them to culture/literature classes taught in English).

Russian Studies graduate faculty consist of award-winning, innovative teachers, leaders in the field of Russian studies nationally and internationally, and active scholars with wide-ranging interests going beyond the ordinary. Extended faculty are in Religious Studies, Political Science and Geography.
