The University of Arizona is pleased to announce a new study abroad opportunity at the Moscow Art Theatre School (MATS), scheduled for May 11-31, 2019. The first two weeks of the program will take place in Moscow, where students will engage in rigorous coursework at MATS; the third week of the program will consist of online learning activities (to be completed remotely).
Students have the option of enrolling in one of the following two courses to receive 3 units of credit from the University of Arizona:
TAR 496A/596A: Russian Theatre and Performance (Stanislavsky Acting Technique)
Focus: Intensive acting, movement, and voice training
Instructors: Moscow Art Theatre Faculty and Professor Greg Pierotti (UA Faculty, School of Theatre, Film and Television)
This course examines, through both applied practice and theoretical study, how the actor’s craft has been practiced and taught in Russia. Students will complete two-weeks of intensive acting training, stage movement, and voice technique with Moscow Art Theatre professors. Through practical studio classes, we will learn aspects of Stanislavsky’s acting method. Our lectures and discussions will analyze how his techniques are translated into contemporary American actor training and professional practice in television, film, and theatre. The program includes cultural outings (museum tours, four theatre performances, a trip to Chekhov’s Estate), lodging, and tuition.
RSS 415/515: The History of Russian Theatre
Focus: Cultural immersion
Instructors: Moscow Art Theatre Faculty and Dr. Colleen Lucey (UA Faculty, Department of Russian and Slavic Studies)
This course covers the history of Russian theatre and performance from its beginnings to the present day. Housed at the world-renowned Moscow Art Theatre, our lectures and discussions will address such questions as: Why do Russian artists and performers utilize the stage for political protest? What made Moscow the hotbed for theatre innovation in the 20th century? How do contemporary Russian theatre-makers address social, political, and generational conflicts? To better answer these questions, we will visit Moscow’s famous museums and theatres—both traditional and avant-garde—with an eye to the ever-changing landscape of Russian theatre. We will also have two meetings with contemporary Russian directors to discuss their perspective on these topics. The program includes cultural outings (museum tours, four theatre performances, a trip to Chekhov’s Estate), lodging, and tuition.
Additional Program Details
Acting, movement, and voice classes will be taught by MATS faculty. Participants will receive a certificate of completion from MATS at the end of the program. No knowledge of Russian is required to participate. This study abroad opportunity is open both to UA and non-UA undergraduate and graduate students, assuming they meet the necessary criteria.
