Study Abroad: Semester Programs in St. Petersburg and Moscow.

The Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) is now accepting applications for Fall 2020 study abroad programs in St. Petersburg and Moscow. Please share this information with your students. 

All CIEE semester programs in Russia feature:

  • 24/7 on-site support 
  • Comprehensive pre-departure and onsite orientations: an introduction to Russian culture, practical matters of living in the city and being in the program

Russian Language Program (RLP) offers:

  • Intensive instruction in grammar, phonetics and conversation matched to student level and taught in groups of six to seven students at St. Petersburg State University
  • Elective content-based courses taught in Russian by expert faculty of St. Petersburg State University
  • Opportunities to conduct research by taking the three-credit elective Directed Independent Research. Former students’ DIR topics include: Heroism and Trauma: Memory of the Second World War in St. PetersburgInfluence of the Russian Orthodox Church on the Russian Public Education SystemPhonetic Characteristics of Speech Disorders
  • Mandatory pre- and post-OPI testing during the first and last weeks of the program
  • Tutoring by qualified instructors of Russian as a foreign language

Russian Area Studies Program (RAS) offers:

  • Elective content-based courses in Russian history, politics, ethnic studies, culture and arts taught in English by highly qualified faculty of the Higher School of Economics 
  • Opportunities to conduct research by taking the three-credit elective Directed Independent Research. Former students’ DIR topics include: Corruption in Post-Authoritarian Countries: Comparative Analysis of Russia and ChilePost-2008 Military Reform in Russia and Implications for Net-WarCensorship and Privacy: designing a study of attitudes and technological practices
  • Russian language courses in grammar and conversation for beginners through advanced learners. There is no Russian language requirement
  • Optional pre- and post-OPI testing during the first and last weeks of the program
  • Tutoring by qualified instructors of Russian as a foreign language

In Moscow:

Business and International Relations offers:

  • Opportunities to fulfil major requirements in the fields of international relations, political science, economics, history, business while studying at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO). Students may take content courses in English through MGIMO’s English language BA program or in Russian with traditional degree students
  • Three-credit academic internships that include individual intern placement, bi-weekly seminars and site visits. Recent internship placements include: Russian International Affairs Council, PIR Center for Policy Studies, Carnegie Center Moscow, the American Center at the US Embassy, Moscow’s World Trade Center, the Russian National Museum of Music, and the Cosmonautics Museum
  • Site visits to international relations and business institutions, such as the US Embassy, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, RT, eBay, and Google
  • Russian language courses in grammar and conversation for beginning through advanced learners. There is no Russian language requirement
  • Tutoring by qualified instructors of Russian as a foreign language
