CFP: Conceptualizing Corruption: The “Old Regime” and the New Order in East-Central-South Europe (1750s-1850s)

During the age of revolutions, West European politicians, scholars, and popular writers often characterized South-East-Central Europe as a corrupt political space. Notables from the region routinely echoed these claims. Those in and outside of South-East-Central Europe mobilized commentaries on “corruption” for their own political, professional, and personal gains. They used the idea of corruption to assert, for instance, that they knew to run more honest and efficient administrations, military regimes, and commercial operations. Political and economic actors on both sides of the continent linked “corruption” to the supposed cultural backwardness and economic underdevelopment of the region. In doing so, public figures naturalized notions of “corruption,” making it appear both widespread and organic, popularizing tropes that have endured right down to the present.

On May 8-9, 2024, in celebration of Europe Day, a hybrid-format conference is scheduled to take place at Yale University. This Conference will bring together graduate students, early-career scholars, and established academics from across disciplines to discuss the most pressing challenges facing Europe, Russia, and Eurasia today. Postdoctoral Fellowship in Central and East European Culture (Indiana University, Bloomington)

The Department of Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures at Indiana University, Bloomington (https://slavic.indiana.edu/) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Central and East European Culture to begin in August 2024. The duration of the fellowship is two years with a teaching load of one course per semester. We welcome applications from early career scholars specializing in the cultures of Central and Eastern Europe, including specialists in media, literature, and the arts. The focus for this inaugural instance of the award will be on South Slavic and Balkan cultures. Eligible candidates will have received their Ph.D. degree within 7 years of the position’s start date. The postdoctoral fellowship provides an exciting opportunity for an emerging scholar to conduct research, teach, and engage in professional development at a top-tier research institution that includes Indiana University’s extensive holdings in its libraries and museums and an array of vibrant cross-disciplinary departments and programs. We seek a dynamic and original thinker who is committed to excellence in scholarship and is well-suited to teaching an introductory survey and an upper-level course for undergraduate and graduate students. Applicants should submit a cover letter that includes a detailed description of their research program and teaching philosophy; a CV; a 20-30 page writing sample; and a one-page statement on how they would foster diversity, equity, and inclusion in research and teaching. Applicants should also provide names and contact information for three individuals who could submit recommendation letters should the applicant proceed to the finalist stage.

Fieldwork in Russian, Kazakh and Moldovan Folklore Expeditions

Scholarship Deadline: March 1, 2024

Undergraduate and graduate students interested in Russian, Kazakh or Moldovan traditional culture have until March 1, 2024 to apply for a scholarship to join field research teams documenting Russian, Kazakh and Moldovan folklore.

Expeditions take place in Kazakhstan the summer of 2024, and in Moldova in January 2025. Scholarship amount: $2000

Teams are led by qualified Russian and Kazakhstani scholars. Proficiency in Russian, Kazakh or Romanian is helpful, but not required. Individual research interests can usually be accommodated.

Summer 2024 expeditions

Predgornoye village, Glukovskii district, Ust-Kamenogorsk province, Kazakhstan. Document songs, stories, rituals and oral histories in a Cossack stanitsa founded here centuries ago .
Bayanaul National park, Pavlodar province, Kazakhstan. Record and compare legends about the spectacular local landscape as told in Russian, Kazakh and English.

January 2025 Expedition

Document the musical folk drama “Tsar Maximilian” as performed in Moldova’s Ocniţa district during the Malanca holidays.

Expedition languages are English, Russian, Kazakh and Romanian.

Call for ASEEES 2024 papers on 19th-c. Russophone women writers

For the third year running, we are organizing a stream of panels at ASEEES dedicated to nineteenth-century Russophone women writers. The theme this year is liberation. We are putting together panels for both the virtual and in-person conferences. In recent years, there has been revived interest in this field and we eagerly encourage graduate students and young scholars to join us. We welcome papers on any female authors and any genres; they could also be comparative, looking at women writers in relation to their male peers or as influences on other writers.
