Wisconsin Russia Project postdoctoral research fellowships for social scientists, funded with a grant from Carnegie Corporation of New York.
January 15, 2019-July 14, 2020.

Fellows are expected to conduct research about Russia in one or more of the five topic areas: 1) Education, labor markets, and inequality; 2) Law and society; 3) Political economy; 4) Identity, place, and migration; and 5) Demographic change. CREECA especially seeks applicants with expertise in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) modeling and/or public policy issues, though these are not absolute requirements for consideration.

Due to the compressed timeline, only U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible for consideration during this round.

A second competition for postdocs will be announced, running September 1, 2019 – August 31, 2020 that will be open to citizens of the Russian Federation and other countries.

Funding: Grad Research in Europe (CES)

Alliance and the Council for European Studies (CES) invite eligible graduate students to apply for its Alliance-CES Pre-Dissertation Research Fellowships. Created in the fall of 2002, Alliance is a non-profit transatlantic joint-venture between Columbia University and three prestigious French institutions: the École Polytechnique, Sciences Po, and Panthéon-Sorbonne University. Each fellowship includes a $4,500 stipend to fund two months’ research in Europe and travel support for attending and presenting at the International Conference of Europeanists.

Eligibility:
The Alliance-CES Pre-Dissertation Research Fellowship is intended to fund fellows’ first research project in Europe. Applicants must:

  • be enrolled in a doctoral program at a university that is a member of Alliance (Columbia University, Sciences Po, École Polytechnique, Panthéon-Sorbonne University)
  • not have completed the majority of doctoral coursework
  • not have begun substantial dissertation research in Europe.

Barring exceptional circumstances, students who have already received comparable support for pre-dissertation research will not be considered eligible.

Please note: Due to restructuring, this fellowship is unavailable for the 2018-19 award cycle. Please check back in with us in the fall of 2019.

The annual application period usually opens October 1. Applications are due (along with all supporting materials) on or before January 15. Applicants will be notified of the Committee’s decision by the end of April.

Submit the CES Pre-Dissertation Fellowship Application Form and return three (3) completed Faculty Recommendation Forms. Applicants must also submit a Language Competency Form for every language which will require functional knowledge to complete the proposed research. All materials are due by January 15. A complete application will include all five of these forms.

Funding: Critical Lang. Scholarship (American Councils)

The CLS Program is an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. Students spend eight to ten weeks abroad studying one of 14 critical languages. The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains.

CLS, a program of the U.S. Department of State, is part of a wider government initiative to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering foreign languages that are critical to national security and economic prosperity. CLS plays an important role in preparing students for the 21st century’s globalized workforce and increasing national competitiveness.

Funding: Central Eurasian Studies Summer Institute (U. of Wisconsin-Madison)

The Central Eurasian Studies Summer Institute (CESSI) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is now accepting applications! We offer courses in intensive elementary and intermediate Kazakh, Tajik, Uyghur, and Uzbek. Additional levels and languages (such as Kyrgyz) may be added with sufficient student interest.

Graduate students, researchers, and professionals who are US citizens are especially encouraged to apply for the Title VIII fellowship, which covers full tuition plus a stipend of $2,500 for the summer. FLAS fellowships are also available for eligible undergraduate and graduate students, and all applicants are eligible for tuition remission scholarships. About the program:

CESSI is an intensive, eight-week language program held each summer in Madison, Wisconsin. CESSI will be held from June 17 to August 9, 2019. Students receive the equivalent of one year of language study during this time and earn eight credits upon completion of the program.  In addition to language classes, CESSI students have the opportunity to attend lectures on Central Eurasia; participate in cultural events, including traditional cooking demonstrations; engage with local Central Eurasian communities; and network with other scholars of Central Eurasia. CESSI is a great way for students to gain language skills before studying abroad, applying for jobs, or conducting fieldwork in the region. Students of all disciplines and academic programs are welcome!

THE FELLOWSHIPS: The American Research Institute in Turkey takes pleasure in inviting applications for one to three long-term advanced fellowships for research in Turkey made possible by support from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The fields of study cover all periods of history in the humanities, including prehistory, history, art, archaeology, literature, and linguistics, as well as interdisciplinary aspects of cultural history. The fellowships support research tenures of four to twelve continuous months during 2019-2020. Stipends of $4,200 per month are awarded on the basis of individual proposals.

ELIGIBILITY: Scholars who have completed their formal training by the application deadline and plan to carry out research in Turkey for four months or longer may apply. They may be citizens or on-going three-year residents of the U.S. Please consult the ARIT U.S. office concerning eligibility. INSTITUTES: ARIT maintains two research institutes in Turkey. The ARIT Istanbul library concentrates on Byzantine and Ottoman Turkey and facilitates archival research in the city. Both centers support research on modem Turkey. Both offer research and study facilities, as well as connections with colleagues, institutions, and authorities in Turkey.

RESEARCH PERMISSION: ARIT fellows are responsible for obtaining the appropriate research permissions and visas. In general, researchers should seek permission to carry out research directly from the director(s) of the institution(s) where they intend to work, including most libraries housed within Turkish museums. Scholars wishing to conduct research in Turkey for longer than three months should apply for the research permit and in addition secure a research visa prior to entering the country.

Researchers who wish to work in collections and some libraries housed in the Turkish museums, however, should make their applications through the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, General Directorate for Cultural Heritage and Museums. If the material they wish to study is part of an excavation, researchers must submit a letter with their application that is signed by the excavation director giving permission to carry out the research. Purpose of Grants: Funded by the U.S. Embassy in Astana, Kazakhstan, five grants will be awarded to U.S. universities to establish partnerships between faculty and administrators at U.S. and Kazakhstani universities or advance current U.S. and Kazakhstani collaborations in higher education. Administered by American Councils for International Education, the grants will support direct travel, honoraria, materials, and conference fees for faculty or administrators in the U.S. and Kazakhstan. Grants are intended to support institutional capacity building, professional development for administrators, joint curriculum and co-curriculum, joint faculty research, student exchanges, and other new areas of collaboration. DAAD Study Scholarships and Long-Term Research Grants for 2019/2020

In order to foster academic exchange at the graduate level, DAAD offers grants and scholarships for students with at least a Bachelor’s degree to either study or research in Germany.·

Terms of Award:

  • Monthly stipends are approximately € 750 for graduate students/€ 1000 for doctoral students and postdocs. DAAD will cover health insurance and provide a flat arte subsidy for travel costs. In addition, limited funds are available for a rent subsidy and family allowance.

Study Scholarships are offered for a full Master’s degree program at a German university or for study at a German university as part of a postgraduate or Master’s degree program completed in the home country.

Long-term Research Grants are awarded to candidates who have completed a Master’s degree, postdocs, individuals wishing to earn a doctoral degree in Germany, or in exceptional cases those with a Bachelor’s degree at the latest by the time they begin their grant-supported research.

  • Study Scholarship: between 10 and 24 months depending on the length of the chosen study program
  • Long-term Research Grants are awarded for periods of 7-10 months. Applicants wishing to complete a doctoral degree program in Germany can only apply for the long-term research grant. They may receive up to three one-year extensions.

The application should include the following documents:

  • Full resume
  • study proposal of max. 3 pages that includes a narrative about academic and personal reasons for the planned study explaining why a particular program has been chosen and how it will further your educational and career goals. No format restrictions regarding font, spacing and paragraphs
  • transcript of all university studies with individual grades

Please note: Applicants for grants in the fields of architecture, music, performing arts and fine art, design/Visual Communication and Film must submit their applications directly to DAAD Bonn, Germany (also, different deadlines); they can not participate in the UT preselection. There are many scholarships and fellowships available to help students pursue intensive language study in RussiaEurasia, the Balkans, and Indonesia with American Councils next semester:

  • Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad (GPA) Fellowships: Funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Fulbright-Hays fellowships are available to undergraduate juniors and seniors, graduate students, and US K-12 teachers pursuing advanced overseas Russian or Persian language study on American Councils’ Advanced Russian Language & Area Studies Program in Moscow or Eurasian Regional Language Program in Dushanbe. Granted on the basis of financial need and academic merit, awards are made in the amount of $7,000 for semester programs.
  • Title VIII Fellowships for Overseas Language StudyFunded by the U.S. Department of State, Title VIII fellowships are available to students enrolled in or intending to enroll in graduate study in a field relevant to U.S. policy regarding Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Fellowships are awarded on the basis of financial need and academic merit and may cover as much as 75% of total program costs on any of the following programs:

o   Advanced Russian Language & Area Studies Program (RLASP)
Offered in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Vladimir, and Almaty, RLASP combines intensive language instruction with a wide range of extracurricular activities, including internships and community service, regional field study excursions, meetings with conversation partners, and discussion groups with local students.

o   Eurasian Regional Language Program (ERLP)

Providing immersion in 18 Eurasian languages across 9 countries in the region, ERLP offers highly-individualized instruction, homestays, specially designed cultural programs, and expert logistical support to participants studying the languages of Central Asia, the South Caucasus, Russia, Ukraine, and Moldova.

o   Balkan Language Initiative (BLI)

Combining personalized academic programming in Albanian, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Macedonian, and Serbian with structured overseas immersion, BLI enables participants to make rapid gains in language proficiency and cultural knowledge while living and studying in Southeast Europe.

  • Dan E. Davidson FellowshipsEstablished in honor of American Councils’ founder and President Emeritus, the Dan E. Davidson Fellowships support highly qualified and deserving individuals who demonstrate a dedication to successful international collaboration and the development of greater mutual understanding between the U.S. and countries around the world. Fellowships of up to $6,000 for Spring 2019 semester study will be awarded for use on American Councils intensive language programs including the Advanced Russian Language & Area Studies Program, Eurasian Regional Language Program, Balkan Language Initiative, and Indonesian Overseas Program.

  • Need-Based and Diversity Scholarships: Committed to improving access to international education for groups traditionally underrepresented in study abroad, American Councils offers scholarships of $500 to $2,500 to support applicants from diverse academic, cultural, and academic backgrounds. These scholarships are available to participants on all AC Study Abroad programs.
