It’s never too soon to start planning! The 2021 Indiana University Language Workshop is now accepting applications for scholarships and fellowships for the intensive study of Russian, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Estonian, Hungarian, Kyrgyz, Latvian, Lithuanian, Mongolian, Polish, Ukrainian, Uzbek, and 16 other languages.

FUNDING

Generous Title VIII funding is available for graduate students for online, in-person, and overseas study.

Funding is also available for undergraduates and lifelong learners. All participants pay in-state tuition.

Pitt Project GO (Global Officers) Scholarship for ROTC students

Deadline: January 13, 2020

The University of Pittsburgh invites Army, Navy/Marine, and Air Force ROTC students from any US college or university to apply for a Pitt Project GO (Global Officers) scholarship for intensive study of 1st-4th year Russian in Summer 2021. Project GO is an initiative sponsored by the Defense Language and National Security Education Office (DLNSEO) and administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE).

Students who have not yet begun their pursuit of Russian are encouraged to apply for an 8-week beginning-level class, which will cover the equivalent of one academic year’s worth of language training. The beginning-level classes, offered by Pitt’s Summer Language Institute (SLI), are held at the University’s main campus in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh from June 7–July 30, 2021. Pitt Project GO scholarships for Beginning Russian cover:
•       Full tuition for 8 University of Pittsburgh credits
•       Housing and a living stipend
•       Travel between the student’s home city and Pittsburgh
•       Textbooks

Info Sessions for IR/Global Studies
Join SRAS for a series of information sessions aimed at students in IR/Global Studies and a range of related fields – security, terrorism, diplomacy, peace, business, and more. In the general sessions we discuss “Building the International Resume” and look at the non-traditional locations offered by SRAS. In thei Special Topic Info Session series, the hosts of the programs abroad will do a short talk on a relevant topic, followed by an opportunity for Q&A and discussion with SRAS alumni. What: Looking to “sample” Russian and determine whether it is the language for you? This is a no stress, no test way for you to familiarize yourself with a language that may look intimidating on the surface, but is so rewarding to learn. Our colleagues in Kyiv (morning/early afternoon/Saturday) and Irkutsk (evenings) are ready to introduce the Russian language and convince you that you can and should do it – whether taking a course at your home institution, online, or abroad!

Please join us for the inaugural session of Share Language, Culture, Life – a new series of moderated online conversations through which you can learn what your Russian peers think on current cultural topics.  

In our first session, we will talk about Russian social media influencers – who they are, how they relate to their audiences, and how they are similar or different to those popular in the West. We will hear the perspective from students in Russia about how they and their friends relate to influencers and compare experiences between the West and Russia.

Summer Language Training Info Sessions (Arizona State University)

In the summer of 2021, the Critical Languages Institute (CLI) at Arizona State University will offer intensive training in 13 less-commonly-taught languages: Albanian, Armenian, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Hebrew, Indonesian, Kazakh, Macedonian, Persian, Polish, Russian, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Uzbek. We know that the challenges of the last six months have exacerbated the pressures faced by our students, our colleagues, and our institutions. In these exceptionally trying times, the experience of CLI 2020 served to reaffirm our belief in the importance of providing high-quality and low-cost language-learning opportunities to the next generation of scholars and practitioners.

Critical Languages Training, Funding, and Info Sessions (Arizona State University)

In the summer of 2021, the Critical Languages Institute (CLI) at Arizona State University will offer intensive training in 13 less-commonly-taught languages: Albanian, Armenian, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Hebrew, Indonesian, Kazakh, Macedonian, Persian, Polish, Russian, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Uzbek. 

CLI offers students from across the US and beyond the opportunity to accelerate their language learning, with a full year or more equivalency of study (8-13 college credits). We focus on less-commonly taught languages of Russia, Eurasia and East Europe: for 30 years, CLI has opened student opportunities to compete for prestigious international fellowships and for careers in government, academia and business where global awareness is critical.

Free Virtual Russian Pronunciation Master Class

Kimberly DiMattia will be offering a free virtual Master Class in Russian Pronunciation this fall based on her textbook Unlocking Russian Pronunciation (which can be found at: https://he.kendallhunt.com/product/unlocking-russian-pronunciation-supplementary-multimedia-mini-course-phonetics-based-famous). The course is open to students at all levels of Russian as well as to instructors who would like to observe Dr. DiMattia’s method in action and apply it to their own teaching!

Virtual Study Abroad: Learn Russian in the EU

“Learn Russian in the European Union” designed full-featured virtual study abroad programs and a set of flexible online components that may be integrated into Russian curriculum at home universities in the Fall 2020 semester.

In spring and summer 2020, we completed several successful and feature-rich virtual study abroad programs for our long-time partners in the USA. Now we make this experience and infrastructure available to all students, teachers and universities.

“Learn Russian in the EU” is accepting applications for Fall 2020 Semester programs:

•   Virtual semester abroad program: Russian language and cultural communication
This program includes academic courses (standard and electives), individual peer communication tutors, and interactive virtual excursions. 
Daugavpils University will award 24 ECTS (12 US) credits.
