Background information

Golosa is leaving Pearson, Inc. for Routledge Publishers. Pearson, Inc. the former publisher has released the copyright for the current edition. The company will no longer print the book. Pearson ancillary materials (audio, video, MyRussianLab) will remain online until December 31, 2020.

The new Golosa 6th edition will be available from Routledge in early 2022.

In this webinar, panelists will discuss some of the formats that universities will be operating under in fall of 2020, including in-person instruction with social distancing, hybrid formats, hyflex formats, and online learning. Panelists will present briefly about what has worked well for them in the past and how they are planning to prepare for the fall. Then panelists will address questions that were posed in the registration form or during the webinar. Finally, all participants will be invited to participate in a breakout session about one of the formats planned for the fall based on their interest.

Webinar: Teaching Polish During the Pandemic

Abstract:
The outbreak of Covid-19 has brought many changes to the way of teaching foreign languages. Even though all institutions had to shift to remote teaching, different schools have taken different approaches to distance learning. The three presenters will discuss how their programs adapted to the new situation, and to what effect. They will discuss related topics such as the mode of teaching (synchronous and/or asynchronous), online teaching methodologies, remote etiquette, students’ engagement, managing online anxiety, and others. The webinar will be followed by facilitated discussion to allow for attendees to discuss best and worst practices and to reflect on the future of online teaching.

Presenters’ bios:
Christopher Caes is Lecturer in Polish at Columbia University. He earned his Ph.D. in Slavic Studies with a Designated Emphasis in Film Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. He has taught previously at the University of Florida and Florida State University. His area of research is 20th-century Polish literature, film, and culture, and his teaching has included Polish and Russian Language, Polish Literature, Slavic Studies, Film Studies, East European History, Science Fiction Studies, and Norse Mythology and Culture.

Piotr Kajak, Assistant Professor at the POLONICUM Centre of Polish Language and Culture for Foreigners, Faculty of Polish Studies, University of Warsaw. Teaches Polish as a Foreign/Second/Heritage Language. Obtained his degrees from cultural studies, Slavic studies, foreign language acquisition and political sciences. His research interests include: Second/foreign language acquisition; culture pedagogy in SLA/FLA; teaching Polish as a foreign/second/heritage language; popular culture in SLA/FLA; Polish popular culture; hip-hop culture; aca-fan approach.

Joanna Pawlina a Dual Language teacher at Claremont Elementary School with a degree in Early Childhood education from Northeastern Illinois University and a Master’s Degree in Dual Language Teacher Leadership obtained from Roosevelt University. Mrs. Pawlina also serves as a dual language liaison for the district where she teaches. Dual language education is her passion and her dream is to inspire Districts to offer such programs to all students.

Russian Teachers Methodology Online Course

Course Dates: July-August

Methodology course for the teachers of Russian in an online format (July – August). For the closed group of 3-5 teachers, there is a possibility to set your own dates and time (even in June), adjusted to your time zone. Get in touch to set up your best study time!

The program might be slightly changed to suit online format, but will still remain very valuable. The focus is on the teaching techniques of the Russian language without translation, but through explanations.

Prof. Dev. : Russian Military Executive Education Course

The Russia and Eurasia Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (https://www.csis.org/) in Washington D.C. has an executive education program CSIS designed for scholars with a background in Russian studies to develop new skills and expertise in analyzing Russian military affairs.

This executive education program is taking place on July 20 – 24, 2020 and is free to participants accepted into the program. CSIS is accepting applications through June 1, 2020 but the earlier applications come in, the better. Engaging Eurasia Teacher Fellowship

Are you or do you know a high school or community college educator interested in broadening knowledge of the unique history, geopolitical atmosphere, and current events in Eurasia? The application deadline for the Engaging Eurasia Teacher Fellowship has been extended! Applications are now due May 15, 2020.

The yearlong competitive fellowship is open to both part-time and full-time educators at the high school and community college level who are interested in deepening their understanding of the history and current events of the post-Soviet space. Fellows will do this through online sessions with expert faculty and scholars, and an in-person (at Harvard University) workshop during spring semester in 2021. In addition to content about regional and international conflicts and disputes, the fellowship will provide an overview of mediation theory and strategies.

Title VIII Research Scholar Program
Provides full support for research in policy-relevant fields in Russia, Eurasia, and Eastern Europe. Fellowships include round-trip international travel; housing and living stipends; visa support; overseas health, accident, and evacuation insurance; archive access; and logistical support. Open to U.S. graduate students, post-doctoral scholars, and faculty.

The Elbe Arts Project – Shared Victory commemorates the 75th anniversary of the day when American and Soviet troops met on the Elbe River during World War II. We invite you to learn more about Russian-American shared history and the crucial role both countries played in restoring the world’s peace in 1945.

Two winning teams — from Russia and the U.S. – will have a chance to publish a comic book or graphic novel together!

Participation is free – the organizers cover international flights, accommodation, visas, and other expenses.

2020 Read Russia Prize: English Translations of Russian Literature

Read Russia is delighted to announce the fourth 2020 READ RUSSIA PRIZE competition for the best new English translations of Russian literature. The READ RUSSIA PRIZE is awarded every two years for works of Russian literature published in new English translations. All publishers of Russian literature in English translation are invited to submit translations newly published between 2018 and 2020.

Nominations should be e-mailed in no later than May 15, 2020. Full submission materials are due in digital form by May 31, 2020. (We will make every effort to be flexible with deadlines this year.)

Fellowship for Politically-Engaged College Women

IGNITE Fellows are changing the face of leadership in communities across America.

Every year IGNITE recruits a cohort of diverse and passionate women in communities across America and provides them with resources, training, and networks to flex their political power and mobilize women on their campuses and in their communities to become civically engaged. Fellows serve as ambassadors for IGNITE’s mission and vision and play a valuable role in our efforts to spread a national message that it is time for young women to step into political power.

Who are we looking for?

IGNITE is looking for Fellows from across the ideological spectrum who are deeply motivated, take initiative, have organizing experience on college campuses and in their communities and have a proven track record of building new initiatives and sustained programming. We are specifically looking for young women who have a history of serving their communities through volunteer activities, internships, public office, or other civic engagement activities. Strong candidates will demonstrate experience in organizing and coalition building, civic engagement and political leadership with a deep commitment to advancing equal rights for women.
