Center for European Studies
UNDERGRADUATE FLAS Fellowships

The Center for European Studies offers a limited number of Undergraduate Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS) for the intermediate or advanced level study of Czech,
Danish, Dutch, Modern Greek, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Serbian/Croatian or Swedish. (English, French, German, and Spanish are not approved languages for this undergraduate fellowship.) Select fellowships may also be available for students studying non- European languages such as Arabic, Persian, Hindi, and Turkish when a contemporary
application of those skills will significantly enhance their work as distinctly European Studies scholars.

These highly competitive undergraduate fellowships are funded by the Department of Education and are available (pending funding) for both summer and academic year studies. Undergraduate students must be engaged in an instructional program at UT with stated performance goals for functional foreign language use or in a program developing such performance goals in combination with area studies, international studies, or the international aspects of a professional studies program. Students must be in the intermediate or advanced study of the less commonly taught languages identified above. Students must also be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Academic Year FLAS

The academic-year FLAS typically provides a nine-month stipend of $5,000 plus institutional payments (tuition and course-related fees) up to $10,000 per academic year. The fellowship
offers financial support for students studying an approved Western/Central European language and taking European Studies coursework at UT. CES hopes to award six academic-year undergraduate FLAS fellowships each year. AWARDS ARE PENDING FUNDING TO CES.

Summer FLAS

The summer FLAS typically provides a stipend of $2,500 plus institutional payments (tuition and course-related fees) up to $5,000 for an organized, intensive language study program.
CES hopes to award four summer graduate undergraduate FLAS fellowships each year. AWARDS ARE PENDING FUNDING TO CES.
