Intern with Students of the World

Congratulations to Maggie Arrellaga, who will intern with Students of the World, a non-profit organization, in Summer 2011.

Each year Students of the World selects a group of UT students to partner in work with another non-profit and raise awareness about some issue in the world using different forms of social media. The first three weeks of summer are spent in Austin planning and preparing, the next month is then spent capturing footage and recording information in whatever country the issue is, and the next three weeks are spent tidying up and doing post-production in Austin with all of the chapters of Students of the World from other universities.

You can find more information about the organization and other internships here: http://www.studentsoftheworld.org/

$510 Collected for Lifeworks

Congratulations to LAHSC for organizing a successful donation drive to Lifeworks, who will help needy families this season.

LAHers dug deep into their pockets and pulled out $310. Dr. Carver had promised to match up to $200 in donations, which brought the drive to a grand total of $510.

Thank you to everyone for the spirit of generosity during this holiday season!

Pinto Carver Essay Contest for LAH Second and First Year Students

Style, in its finest sense, is the last acquirement
of the educated mind; it is also the most useful.
It pervades the whole being.  The administrator
with a sense for style hates waste; the engineer
with a sense for style economizes his material;
the artisan with a sense for style prefers good
work.  Style is the ultimate morality of mind.
-Alfred North Whitehead

In the Dictionnaire Philosophique (1764), Voltaire wrote, “Le mieux est l’ennemie du bien” (“The best is the enemy of the good”), a saying often quoted, often repeated in various forms.  The late Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan in a 1987 speech, for example, put it this way:  “If we get into the mind-set where the good becomes the enemy of the best, we will get nothing.”  Write an essay in which you agree or disagree with Voltaire’s assertion.   Needless to say, the more well developed your thoughts, the more specific your language, the better.
