RAINN Day 2011

Dear friends,

The Center for Women’s and Gender Studies and INSPIRE: Empowering Texas Women Leaders are pleased to invite you to a special event next Thursday, in conjunction with RAINN day 2011, to raise awareness and educate UT students about sexual violence on campus.  We will have a short screening of a collection of videos regarding the topic, followed by a panel of experts who will answer questions about sexual violence/assault at UT and in the Austin community.  Some of the panel participants are Dr. Gloria Gonzalez-Lopez (a sociology professor and expert on the topic of sexual violence), a representative from SafePlace, and a peer-educator undergraduate student from Voices Against Violence.  The details of the event are as follows:

The Students of the World program is a unique experience that combines purposeful, international travel with intensive media production aimed at capturing and distributing multimedia content for organizations and business that highlights their work through a variety of outlets.

Students of the World (SOW) is non-profit media production company that partners with college students to highlight social issues and the innovative solutions of those organizations that are working to address them around the world.

Students will start the internship part-time during the spring semester before the full-time summer portion that includes 4-weeks of international travel and 6-weeks of post-production in Austin.

RHE 368C Writing Center Internship

RHE 368C is a course designed to prepare students to serve as peer tutors in the Undergraduate Writing Center (UWC). During the first part of the term, the class covers issues relating to writing center theory and practice. Students analyze the goals and practices of writing centers; examine elements of contemporary rhetorical and composition theory (including the writing process); survey typical course syllabi and assignments; and review basics of grammar, mechanics, and usage. There is one major writing assignment (6-8 pages) and numerous shorter online projects. During the final five weeks of RHE 368C, members of the class work under supervision for six hours a week as consultants (unpaid) in the Undergraduate Writing Center.

Why do students take RHE 368C?

To become eligible to work as paid consultants in the UWC and to gain practice as writing tutors. Students in RHE 368 students are supervised and reviewed by the staff in the UWC during their internship period. Taking the course in itself, however, does not guarantee UWC employment.

Who may take RHE 368C?

Any undergraduate who meets the upper-division requirement and gains permission from the instructor to register for the course. Priority is given to students who can give the UWC several semesters of service as a tutor. We actively seek students from across various majors and disciplines, especially from business and the sciences.

Why do I need instructor permission to take RHE 368C?

UWC interns must have appropriate writing and personal skills to serve effectively as tutors. RHE 368C is not a course for students seeking to improve their own marginal writing skills.

How do I get permission to take RHE 368C?

Early in the fall semester (before registration) email John Ruszkiewicz at <ruszkiewicz@mail.utexas.edu>, indicating that you would like permission to register for his section of RHE 368C. Attach one or more brief writing samples to this email. This work should represent your recent academic or professional writing. You may, for example, include a research paper, a detailed lab report, or an article you have written for The Daily Texan or other campus publications. You should also ask an instructor familiar with your academic work to send Professor Ruszkiewicz an email endorsement. Just a very brief note is all that is necessary, not a full letter of recommendation. One line might suffice.

After you have submitted the writing sample, Professor Ruszkiewicz may schedule a brief interview with you in Calhoun 202. Following your interview, you will be notified whether your admission to the course has been approved, wait-listed, or not recommended. Admission to the class is likely to be competitive again in spring 2011, but do be sure to apply if interested. Email Professor Ruszkiewicz with any additional questions.

Advancement Through Education Program

The student-run nonprofit, the Advancement Through Education Program, strives to end the generational cycle of poverty through education. There are two parts to the organization’s mission: It sponsors adult students who are studying for the GED exam and currently is trying to build up a mentor program with at-risk middle students. We are currently looking for students who are interested in getting involved in the organization itself, as well as student mentors who are willing to have a bimonthly commitment to mentoring a middle school student.

Job Description:  Peer Advisors act as the administrative “front line” for the advising suite for undeclared Liberal Arts students. They provide accurate information to the students, faculty, and staff who rely on the Student
Division for information on university and college policies and procedures. Peer Advisors are responsible for providing accurate information over the phone, through email, and in person to students, faculty,
and staff.

Qualifications:  CURRENTLY ENROLLED undergraduate student at UT. Preferred graduation date NO EARLIER THAN FALL 2012. Customer service experience. Detail-oriented. Enthusiastic. Fast learner. Effective
communication skills, both written and verbal. Ability to adapt to a fast-paced environment. Ability to handle confidential information. Ability to work the hours specified, with potential for increased hours in
the future. May be asked to adjust class schedule to meet desk coverage needs in the future as well.

Reminder TIP Mentor Applications Due Friday, Sept 23

Texas Interdisciplinary Plan Academic Peer Mentors are successful and talented students in the Colleges of Natural
Sciences, Liberal Arts, and Education (Kinesiology Majors Only) who assist first-year students as they transition from
high school to UT. Academic Peer Mentors are highly trained  and work closely with up to six first-year students to ensure
academic success and promote the TIP small college experience.
Academic Peer mentors serve a mentoring role and have the  option to provide tutoring for introductory courses. Academic
Peer Mentors are an integral part of the staff of the Texas
Interdisciplinary Plan Scholars Program.

Texas Undergraduate Law Review

We are proud to invite you to participate in the newly founded Texas Undergraduate Law Review.

The Texas Undergraduate Law Review’s purpose will be to help guide and shape the next generation of Texas attorneys by raising awareness and encouraging and facilitating academic discussions of law-related issues on the state, national, and international level. It will also be an opportunity for participants to have a published culmination of their work and research.

The only requirement needed to join the Texas Undergraduate Law Review is that participants be undergraduate students attending an academic institution in the state of Texas. Just as the law deals with almost every aspect of society, so too is the diversity sought after for the review – all majors are encouraged to participate.

We invite any interested students to attend our information session on Monday September 26, 2011 in the Black Box Theater (SAC 2.304) at 6:00pm. During the information session, attendees will learn about the purpose of the law review, leadership positions available, goals for the semester and the year, as well as how to contribute their submissions to the review. Additionally, world-renowned attorney and honorary academic sponsor for the Texas Undergraduate Law Review, Dr. Sarah Weddington, will be addressing attendees on the importance of the discussion of law among undergraduates as we prepare ourselves for our future vocations in the legal field.

Job Posting: Student Technology Technician

JOB DESCRIPTION
The Student Technology Assistants (STA) will work individually in a collaborative environment with the Director and staff of the Center of European Studies (CES), as well as LAITS staff assisting CES in the ongoing management and production of its monthly e-newsletter and websites. The STA, who will work in one of CES’s main offices, will upload web content and e- newsletter content. CES will provide the STA with the necessary computer and software equipment for the job.

QUALIFICATIONS
Have a background in web design, and demonstrate experience with related pro- grams and languages (preferably Photoshop, HTML, and Basic CSS – additional skills in Ad- vanced CSS, Content Management Systems, and mass email marketing are not necessary but considered a strong plus). Above aver- age creativity is necessary, along with a strong sense of design. An ability to write and edit for the web is also desirable. Atten- tion to detail is absolutely essential, as well as punctuality, reliability, and (if possible) a decent sense of humor.
