Advise TX College Advising Corps

The application for the 2013-2014 Advise TX College Advising Corps is now available on the UT job website.  Advise TX will be hiring 22 recent UT grads to serve as full-time high school college advisers in one of five regions across the state.

If  students would like to learn more about our program, we will participating in/hosting a few recruitment events next week.  Feel free to visit us at the following events:

·         April 2nd – Non-Profit and Government Career Fair, Texas Union Ballroom, 11am-3pm

·         April 3rd – Communications Career Fair, DKR North End Zone, 10am-3pm

·         April 3rd – Advise TX Information Session, BMC 4.212, 5:15pm-6:15pm

·         April 4th – Advise TX Information Session, FAC 334, 5pm-6pm

Below is a list of important dates. One important date coming up is- Monday, April 1 is the last day to Q drop or change a class to pass/fail (if you have 30 hrs).  
Registration- The Summer course schedule is online already. The fall schedule will be online by 5:00 pm on April 2. We will have the Lower-Division Honors course sign up book to sign up for lower-division honors courses in the office by Monday, April 8.
You don’t have to sign up for the upper-division LAH 350 classes. Just register if the class is open. Those of you who are dual degree students (i.e. Communication/Liberal Arts, Business/Liberal Arts), you must contact Stacey or Linda during your registration time to be added into an upper-division LAH class.
 REGISTRATION HINT FOR GOV MAJORS: If the class is cross-listed (GOV 379/LAH 350) and you are a Government major, go to the department and they will SAVE a seat for you. For other LAH 350 classes that are cross-listed, you can register for the class under either number. If it’s full in one section, look at the cross-listed section. This goes for all courses that are cross-listed.
Registration advising begins now. Just call (512-471-3458)  or come by the office to set up an appointment with Linda or Stacey. Please do not email for a time.
Registration begins April 15 through April 26.
Grad Students, and students with priority registration will register Monday, April 15.

An exciting opportunity has just come available in the Houston office of the international law firm of Fulbright & Jaworski L.L.P. The Attorney Recruiting Department has an immediate need for an Attorney Recruiting Intern to assist with our 2013 Summer Associate Program from May to July and will be responsible for correspondence to the summer associates, organization of training seminars and social events, and general day to day office logistics.

The successful candidate must have strong organizational skills, possess excellent leadership and interpersonal skills, the ability to multi-task and work well under pressure with minimal supervision. The ability to work well in a team environment is essential, along with working with employees at all levels within the firm. The position requires flexibility in work schedule and will require overtime in the evenings and on the weekends. The candidate must be at least 21 years of age.

Government Internal Transfer Session

If you are interested in transferring into the Department of Government and are already a Liberal Arts major,  you MUST attend our Internal Transfer Session. This session will be help on April 4 from 10-11 in BAT 5.108. The session is by Reservation ONLY!  If you are interested please stop by the Advising Office in BAT 2.102 or call at 512-232-7283 to make a reservation.

 

April 1 Deadline for LAS Scholarships

The Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies is now offering a number of travel scholarships for study abroad in Latin America, both for summer 2013 and for academic year 2013-2014.  For summer 2013, we are offering four to six $2,500 travel scholarships (I will follow up later with confirmation of the numbers we will award); students must attend a degree-granting institution this summer and return with at least six hours of college credit.  For academic year 2013-2014, we will award six $5,000 travel scholarships for semester-long study abroad.  The students must attend degree-granting institutions and return with at least 12 hours of college credit.

UHC continues to seek Honors Colloquium student mentors

The University Honors Center invites UT Austin students (including those who are graduating this May) to apply for a position as an Honors Colloquium student mentor for the 32nd annual Honors Colloquium, July 17-20, 2013.

The Honors Colloquium is a three-day event that takes place on The University of Texas at Austin campus and is designed to introduce rising high school seniors to life at the university while encouraging them to apply to UT and its honors programs.

Student mentors are a critical component of the Honors Colloquium. They interact with participants, serve as RAs, and provide support for Honors Colloquium programs and activities.

Urdu Placement Exam

All students taking the exam will need to have an official photo identification (UT ID) card with them.  They will also need to bring with them a form that they will receive from Student Testing Services after they have paid the required fees.

DETAILS:

All students who appear for the placement exam will take one exam.  On this exam, if they receive 90% or higher, then they will receive credit (in hours only), for two years of Urdu (Urdu 506, 507, 312K and 312L = 16 hours).  If the students receive a score in the range of 75-89, then they will receive credit (in hours only) for one year of Urdu (Urdu 506 & 507 = 10 hours).  The students will not receive a letter grade for the same exams since we only give letter grades for courses completed in residence at the University of Texas at Austin.  Thus the exam will not have any impact on the students’ GPA. 

CONTENT:

Ninety percent of the exam will require the students to write in the Urdu script.  The exam will include translation exercises (from English to Urdu) as well as Urdu reading comprehension.
