After graduating from The University of Texas (UT) at Austin College of Pharmacy, Dr. Lawson practiced in community and institutional settings for over 11 years before entering the pharmacy graduate program at UT where he earned his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Pharmacy Administration. He joined the faculty at the UT College of Pharmacy in 1992 and is currently the SmithKline Centennial Professor Emeritus in the Health Outcomes Division.
Dr. Lawson’s teaching interests include health care systems and community pharmacy management in the professional program, and health care systems, research methods, and data analysis in the graduate program.
His research interests include utilization and expenditure patterns, and factors affecting the utilization of and expenditures for prescription medications and other health care services.

National and International Service Activities
Dr. Lawson served as Member-At-Large, Chair Elect, and Chair of the Economic, Social, and Administrative Sciences Section of the American Pharmacists Association (APhA), and chaired other APhA committees.
University/College Service Activities
Dr. Lawson chaired the college’s Professional Program Financial Aid Committee and serves on several other college and university committees. He was head of the Health Outcomes and Pharmacy Practice Division from 2011 to 2016, and he chaired the college’s Executive Committee.
Selected Honors and Awards
Dr. Lawson received the Texas Excellence Teaching Award (1995, 2011, 2020-class of 2022), the Regents Outstanding Teaching Award (2012), the Sheffield Outstanding UT Alumnus Award (2014), the Texas Pharmacy Association Distinguished Service Award (1997), and the Top 10 Cited Faculty recognition by graduating seniors (10 times). He has been recognized as an Outstanding Reviewer by the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association and the Journal of Managed Care and Specialty Pharmacy. He is a Fellow of the American Pharmacists Association and the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Academic Leadership Fellows Program.
