Mapping Images of Mexico’s 1910 Centenario

It takes a village to make history accessible. Preserved at the Benson within the Genaro García Collection, there is a significant subset of photographs documenting the 1910 centennial celebration of Mexico’s independence. This workshop will give you an opportunity to take an active role in making these historically valuable materials available to the public.
LLILAS Benson Special Collections & Digital Scholarship Intern and Department of History graduate student, Madeleine Olson, will cover the basics on developing digital collections comprising visual-geospatial materials. Attendees will use HistoryPin, a free user-generated archive based on mapping, to publish the images. They will also learn how to reuse the collection as data in Carto, a web-based mapping tool, to explore the spatial and temporal relationships of the photographs. Overall, participants will explore a variety of tools that could help them make their own georeferenced sources—and scholarship—more accessible to the public.
