Contrary to some media reports, fentanyl and other ultra-potent opioids are not resistant to naloxone. Furthermore, major toxicology organizations have issued a joint statement refuting the assertion that passive exposure to these drugs may cause accidental overdoses. While we must avoid hysteria on this topic, there is reason to fear fentanyl. Emerging data from harm reduction organizations indicates fentanyl is present in most samples of heroin and many samples of non-opioid illicit drugs. Fentanyl test strips may be helpful in evaluating whether a drug sample contains ultra-potent opioids. We are distributing fentanyl test strips as a potential harm reduction tool along with these fentanyl warning cards.
