Core and Flag Requirements FAQs

  • What are core and flag course requirements?
    • Core and flag course requirements are university general course requirements that every student enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin must fulfill in order to receive their degree from the University of Texas at Austin.  The Pharm.D. degree falls under these requirements.The School of Undergraduate Studies oversees the core and flag requirements.

  • Where is there information about the core and flag course requirements?
    • Information about the core and flag requirements can be found on the School of Undergraduate Studies (UGS) web pages.
    • Please read through the information on both types of requirements to ensure a good understanding.

  • If I have a prior baccalaureate degree or higher, can any of the core and flag requirements be waived?
    • If you have a prior baccalaureate degree (equivalent) or higher from any accredited institution approved by UT Austin, both core and flag requirements not yet fulfilled upon matriculation into the Pharm.D. program will be waived by UGS (School of Undergraduate Studies).

  • If I have a prior associates degree only, can any of the core and flag requirements be waived?
    • If you have a prior associates degree from a Texas state-funded institution, only core course requirements not fulfilled upon matriculation into the Pharm.D. program will be waived by UGS.  You will still need to the complete the flag requirements, specifically the global cultures flag requirement since all other flag requirements are covered in the Pharm.D. curriculum.

  • What institutions are considered Texas state-funded institutions?

  • What is another way to fulfill the CORE course requirements?
    • If you are attending a Texas state-funded institution, we recommend that you complete the general core requirements at your institution to be considered “Core Complete”.  If you are considered “Core Complete” at your institution by way of your official transcript, you will also be considered “Core Complete” with UT Austin.Use the Texas Coordinating Board site and visit with your academic advisor to verify that the core requirements at your institution are accurate

  • How can I fulfill the First-Year Signature CORE course requirement?
    • Please read the information and expectations of the First Year Signature course.
    • Current UT Austin students: Please consult with your undergraduate academic advisor and/or use the on-line course schedule (use filter #5 and enter “UGS” for field and “302” or “303” for number) to find a course that will fulfill this requirement.  UGS 302 or 303 will fulfill the First-Year Signature course requirement.
    • Prospective students who are completing pre-requisites at a different institution:There are no equivalent courses outside of UT Austin that will fulfill the First Year Signature course.You will need to take this course as a Pharm.D. student at UT Austin unless you have a earned or fulfilled one of the following:
      • a prior bachelors degree (or equivalent) or higher from an accredited institution
      • an associates degree from a Texas state-funded institution
      • “Core Complete” from a Texas state-funded institution
