Scott & White Medical Center (SWMC) is a 636-bed tertiary care facility. Founded in 1904, our hospital also includes the Scott & White Clinic in Temple, multiple regional clinics throughout Central Texas, and over 200,000-member health plan.  Scott & White Medical Center is part of Baylor Scott & White Health network spanning across Texas and is a Level 1 Trauma Center.  The SWMC is an academic facility, serving as a major teaching site for The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy   and the Texas A&M University  Rangel College of Pharmacy and College of Medicine.

The Scott & White Pharmacy Department provides progressive, clinically oriented pharmacy services for the hospital, clinic, and health plan. Included among the major departmental functions are 24-hour inpatient pharmacy services, home infusion services, anticoagulation, diabetes and dyslipidemia management clinics and a wide range of services provided by SWMC patient care pharmacists and clinical specialists.

In addition to provision of a wide array of clinically oriented patient care services, the Department of Pharmacy at SWMC has a significant teaching/research presence within the institution. A major element of the departmental teaching mission involves offering both pharmacy practice and post-doctoral specialty residency training opportunities.  The purpose of this residency is to provide postgraduate education to licensed pharmacists to strengthen their knowledge, skills, and abilities for pharmacy practice.  This residency is to prepare pharmacist clinicians for patient care positions in a challenging teaching hospital environment and/or continued specialization in a PGY-2 residency.

The SWMC Department of Pharmacy offers six positions as hospital-based, ASHP-accredited PGY1 residencies designed to provide broad training and experience in hospital pharmacy practice.  Four positions are adult hospital pharmacy practice positions, one position with a hematology-oncology emphasis, and the sixth position emphasizes pediatric pharmacy practice at the Baylor Scott & White McLane Children’s Medical Center.

The residents divide the year between clinical rotations and patient care pharmacist responsibilities. The combination of training and practice responsibilities provide a blend of experience for highly motivated individuals with a significant interest in hospital pharmacy practice who are beginning their professional careers.  Opportunities are also available for collaborative research and teaching experiences for the resident.  For those interested in teaching, an academic training program for residents is offered by the College of Pharmacy.

Once a resident successfully completes their PGY1 training, a PGY2 Internal Medicine residency is also available at SWMC.
