Lisa Mican, Pharm.D., BCPP
Lisa M. Mican, Pharm.D., BCPP has served as the assistant director of psychiatric pharmacy services for the Austin State Hospital since 2002. She obtained her Pharm.D. in May 2000 from the University of Texas and has been a Board Certified Psychiatric Pharmacist since 2003. Dr. Mican completed an ASHP Accredited Specialty Residency in Psychiatric Health Outcomes & Pharmacy Practice at the Audie L. Murphy VA Hospital in San Antonio with an appointment as clinical instructor for the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Prior to entering her clinical residency training, she served as the pharmacist-in-charge for the San Marcos Treatment Center, a residential adolescent psychiatric treatment facility.
Dr. Mican has dual academic appointments as Adjunct Faculty for the College of Pharmacy at The University of Texas at Austin Division of Health Outcomes and Pharmacy Practice and Adjunct Assistant Professor for the Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy A&M Health Science Center Division of Pharmacy Practice. She precepts pharmacy residents and interns on clinical psychiatry rotations at the Austin State Hospital. The Austin State Hospital opened in 1861 and stands on a lush expanse of land just minutes away from the University of Texas. The acute care psychiatric hospital serves an average of 292 patients and is committed to providing caring and evidence-based psychiatric treatment for mental illness. The facility serves a diverse population with specialty treatment teams for adult acute care, children and adolescents, geriatrics, forensics, developmental disabilities, and extended care. The Austin State Hospital is a practice site affiliated with the UT College of Pharmacy’s ASHP Accredited Specialty Residency program in psychiatry.
Lisa Mican is the clinical coordinator for the Austin State Hospital Psychiatric Pharmacy Services Department. A variety of clinical pharmacy services are offered at the hospital including psychopharmacology consultations, diabetes education and glucometer teaching, continuing education and group patient medication education classes. Dr. Mican serves as primary editor for the quarterly Austin State Hospital pharmacy newsletter, PharmDigest, and has research published in several journals including Current Psychiatry, Schizophrenia Research, Journal of Psychiatric Practice, The Annals of Pharmacotherapy, and Journal of Pharmacy Technology. She serves on the Austin State Hospital Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee as well as the P&T Medication Use Evaluation Subcommittee. Lisa Mican frequently assists the Department of State Health Services Executive Formulary Committee with projects including updating the Medication Utilization Evaluation Audit Criteria and creating drug monographs for formulary consideration. She is a member of the College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists (CPNP) and assists in manuscript peer-review for multiple journals. Dr. Mican volunteers with the Samaritan Health Ministries Mental Health Clinic, Girl Scouts, PTA and Back Pack Coalition. In her spare time she likes to spend time with her family and exercise outdoors in the beautiful and sunny State of Texas.
