The Precision Mechatronics and Control Laboratory (PMCL) at The University of Texas at Austin focuses on the design and control of smart and precision mechatronic systems for various emerging application areas, including semiconductor manufacturing equipment, scientific instruments, robotics, etc.
Our research approach emphasizes an integral perspective towards mechatronic systems using the following two methodologies:
- Design for control: Instead of developing a mechatronic system sequentially by designing hardware followed by control, we design the system with consideration of control from the beginning, thereby avoid design conservatism and achieve better performance.
- Control for design: Instead of sticking with well-established system elements, we develop novel control, estimation, and intelligent methods that enable new applications of unconventional system elements, which can deliver better overall performance in mechatronic systems.
We research on both hardware and control with a system point of view to explore a larger design space for creative mechatronic solutions.
