XXV Biennial Graduate Student Colloquium

Community Building through Iberian, Latin American and Latinx Literatures, Cultures, and Linguistics

The graduate students of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Texas at Austin would like to invite you to the upcoming XXV Biennial Graduate Student Colloquium – Community Building through Iberian, Latin American and Latinx Literatures, Cultures, and Linguistics. (to be held in person and virtually via Zoom).


The invited keynote speakers are Dr. Evelyn Hu-Dehart, professor of history and director of the Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America at Brown and Dr. Rafael Orozco, professor of Linguistics and Spanish at LSU. Dr. Hu-Dehart’s areas of interest include migrations and the Asian diaspora in Latin America, history and Indigenous resistance in Mexico, as well as transnationalism. Her latest book, published in 2016 by University of Wisconsin Press, explores the history of the Yaqui resistance in Mexico in the 19th century. Dr. Orozco’s areas of interest are Sociolinguistics, language contact, & multilingualism. His latest book, published in 2018 by John Benjamins Publishing Company, looks at Spanish language variations in Colombia and diasporic communities in New York focusing on the effects of language contact. Apart from provenance in their fields they are leading scholars focused on the power of community.
