A Message From Gage Paine

Gage Paine, Vice President for Student Affairs

Congratulations! And thank you to everyone on a successful opening of the academic year.

Our Housing staff and Texas Parents made Mooov-In look easy. The University Unions staff managed to fit in a day-long visit by staff and students from the University of Kentucky who came to look at our amazing Texas Union and Student Activity Center. Brooke and Joshua provided media training to dozens of staff and students who then went on to do great interviews with numerous TV stations – often live and before the sun was up!

Longhorn Welcome has been a wonderful partnership with the Provost’s Office and Athletics – kudos to New Student Services staff for their work on this program. And the list goes on . . . too numerous to even attempt to list are the hundreds of staff members who each day, in ways large and small, helped new students and their families feel welcome on our campus.

Over the past couple of weeks, I have attended Resident Assistant Training, the Fall Kickoff for Recreational Sports and the student staff training for the Office of the Dean of Students. During those events, I have had the chance to talk with our student leaders and student staff members. I am reminded yet again why working on a university campus is so wonderful. The opportunity to work with, learn from and support our students through their educational journey is both an honor and a privilege. It doesn’t matter what your job title is, all of us are doing work that has meaning and purpose and there is nothing better than that.

It’s complex and challenging work. However, it all comes together because so many people are willing to offer a helping hand. We keep smiling despite the 100º heat and do what’s necessary to create an environment where learning and growth (and fun) can happen.

Again, congratulations on doing such extraordinary work for our students. Thank you for all you have done to start off our new year in the best way possible. Thank you for all you will continue to do during the coming weeks as we continue to live our mission – as educators, supporting students throughout their university experience by providing the best and most innovative programs, facilities and services.

Have a great year, everyone! Hook ‘Em!
