Educating young girls about the opportunities that engineering holds for them is a key mission of SWE Outreach. In the past, we have volunteered with Girl Scouts, GirlStart, and schools in the Austin area to help cultivate the desire to pursue STEM field careers in young women. As volunteers, our job is to design an activity that will excite young students while teaching them about an applicable science concept. Each hands-on activity relates to science that the students are learning in school; connecting the textbook ideas with real life activities emphasizes the importance of what they learn and sparks further interest. Some of the activities we have done in the past include magnetic hover cars, mini Rube Goldbergs, paper cup zip lines, marshmallow catapults, and bouncy balls. Each activity presents a challenge in a fun, innovative way.
