The Black Graduate Student Association (BGSA) is dedicated to improving the quality of graduate and professional student life at the University of Texas at Austin. The BGSA’ s mission is to promote academic excellence, mentoring, professional guidance, and social support for scholarly advancement of undergraduate students, graduate students, and other members of the University of Texas community of the African Diaspora.

2016 – 17 Vision
BGSA will serve as the preeminent professional, social and programmatic organization at the University of Texas at Austin; not simply for Black students, but as an organization – period.
All board members will serve as role models and leaders on campus by all means and each and every one will support each other through continued investment, cooperation and collaboration.
2016- 17 Themes
- Unity: comprises intentional coordination with other Black Graduate Associations and Black Undergraduate Associations for the purposes of meeting and exceeding common goals.
- Fellowship: comprises social events and programming to make Black Graduate Students feel welcome and whole and to develop lasting bonds and continued membership. Led by the Vice President.
- Mentorship: comprises efforts that aim to improve graduate-undergraduate and graduate-community relations. The Mentor Initiative will work with local organizations that have the goal of providing opportunities to enhance the lives of African American students at the undergraduate and K-12 levels at the University and in the Austin/Travis County community. Led by the Mentorship Director.
- Empowerment: comprises efforts that aim to improve graduates professional
opportunities, including networking, professionalism and professional skills
development, as well as adjustment to and welcoming to the City of Austin and the Austin black community. The Empowerment Initiative will work with UT black organizations and other essential departments/programs and Austin local organizations /professional societies. Led by the Empowerment Director.
