Smart Change by Art Markman, Ph.D.
Changing behavior is hard, because we have to overcome habits that are deeply ingrained. In this talk, Dr. Markman will introduce you to the basic structure of the motivational system that drives behavior. Dr. Markman distinguishes between the Go System that leads you to act and the Stop System that stops actions you no longer want to perform. Then, he will introduce five tools to help you change behavior effectively. These tools involve (1) Setting the right goals, (2) Making good plans, (3) Preparing for temptation, (4) Managing the environment, and (5) Engaging with people. Dr. Markman will also talk about the importance of learning to recover from mistakes.
Dr. Art Markman is the Annabel Irion Worsham Centennial Professor of Psychology and Marketing at the University of Texas at Austin. He is also the Founding Director of the Program in the Human Dimensions of Organizations. The HDO program brings the humanities and the social behavioral sciences to people in business. Art has always been interested in bringing insights from Cognitive Science to a broader audience. To that end, he writes blogs for many sites including Psychology Today and Fast Company. Art is also on the scientific advisory boards for the Dr. Phil Show and the Dr. Oz Show. Along with Bob Duke, Art hosts the radio show Two Guys on Your Head for KUT Radio in Austin.
