About Farm-to-Work

Through the Farm-to-Work (FTW) program, the Sustainable Food Center (a local non-profit) is connecting UT Austin to local farmers to provide fresh, local produce to students, faculty and staff on a weekly basis.

How It Works

  • Decide if you would like to receive your produce from the North, South, Pickle Research Campus or UTA location and sign-up for the program closest to your office.
    • North: Student Services Building – 101 West Dean Keeton. Pick-up time: Wednesdays from 11:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m.
    • South: Breezeway between Brackenridge and Roberts Residence Halls on 21st St. Pick-up time: Wednesdays from 12:15-12:45 p.m.
    • East: North End Zone Food Court. Pick-up time: Wednesdays 11:15-11:45 a.m.
    • Pickle Research Campus: Bus stop kiosk on the southeast side of the Commons Learning Center (Bldg. 137). Pick-up time: Wednesdays from 10:00-10:30 a.m.
    • UT School of Public Health/UTA Site: The UT Administration Building – 1616 Guadalupe. Pick-up: Wednesday distributions will happen behind the building, directly out of the farmer’s van, at the corner of 16th St. and San Antonio between 2:15-2:30 p.m. Farmer: Animal Farm.
  • There is no cost to join, no commitment to a weekly purchase and always a chance to unsubscribe.
  • Purchase a $22 box online by the corresponding deadline. The deadline to order for the North, South, East and PRC sites is Mondays by 5 p.m. The deadline for the UT School of Public Health/UTA site is Tuesdays at 5 p.m.
  • You will receive weekly email reminders when it is time to purchase produce.
  • Bring a bag and pick up your fresh, local produce at work at the designated time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does an average pick up take?

It can vary from week to week, but generally speaking it should only take a few minutes to pick up your produce from the drop off location.

Yes! A list of what to expect will be on the sign up page every week by Monday morning. While the farmer strives to offer accurate product information, fruit and vegetable varieties can vary, which can cause the basket contents to change from what was shown on the website.

Is there a deadline to when I can order for the week?

Yes! The deadline to order for the North, South, East and PRC sites is Mondays by 5 p.m. The deadline for the UT School of Public Health/UTA site is Tuesdays at 5 p.m.

How many pounds will be included in each basket?

The number of items and pounds will vary from week to week. However, the farmer will provide $20 market value worth of produce in the basket.

Do the items need to be refrigerated?

The produce should be fine in an air conditioned office setting for the remainder of the work day.  Feel free to bring a cooler bag or ice packs if you are concerned about the heat.

How do I account for my work time when picking up my produce?

You should partner with your manager regarding your work schedule. Options may include requesting to flex your break or lunch periods on the day of produce delivery, arriving early or staying late on the day of produce delivery, or requesting to use your accrued annual leave. If you are unable to pick up your produce, you may ask another person to pick it up for you.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), only 14% of adult Texans eat at least two fruits and three vegetables a day. The CDC now recommends 2-3 cups (4-6 servings) per day but advises that the more fruits and vegetables that people eat, the better. Fruits and vegetables help prevent and reverse many chronic diseases, including coronary heart disease and some cancers. With the majority of an employee’s waking hours spent in the workplace, HealthPoint strives to support employees in protecting their health. FTW is one way to increase access to healthy food.

The purpose of the Farm-to-Work is:

  • To increase access to fresh, local produce for UT Austin faculty and staff
  • To enhance the sense of community at UT Austin
  • To reinforce existing wellness programs
  • To provide learning opportunities for students
