Stephen M. Strakowski, MD, is the Founding Chair of Psychiatry at the Dell Medical School, University of Texas at Austin. He is also Professor of Psychiatry, Psychology and Educational Psychology at UT.

He was principal investigator of a NIMH P50 Center for Intervention Development and Applied Research (CIDAR) Award, recently completed. This large program integrated neuroimaging and treatment methodologies to better understand the onset and early disease progression of bipolar disorder. This Bipolar Imaging and Treatment Research Center (BITREC) arose from more than 20 years of research experience and multiple prior NIMH and foundation awards that formed one of the world’s leading bipolar research groups. Additionally, he is a national leader addressing health disparities in the U.S., specifically in the widely recognized problem of misdiagnosis of African Americans with schizophrenia. In this research, he established a multi-site research group that continues to develop new initiatives. He has also been active in dozens of industry-sponsored research studies. In his research efforts, Dr. Strakowski has published more than 300 manuscripts, letters, books and book chapters. He has received numerous awards for this work.

Dr. Strakowski is an internationally recognized and trusted expert in the study and treatment of bipolar and other mood disorders. His research group has been a world leader studying the treatment, outcomes and neurobiology of these conditions. He is recognized as a Best Doctor® and by US News and World Report® as a Top 1% Psychiatrist. He maintains an active clinical practice and research career.
