How to Create an Affirming Space Asian Students & Colleagues in Post-Secondary Education
The Asian community is among the largest growing communities of color within the United States. The University of Texas at Austin’s Asian community is the second-largest community of color on-campus, which encompasses 20.2% of the entire student body population. The Asian/Asian American population at UT is pyramidally represented, by which we mean that despite the significant Asian student representation, Asian representation diminishes among staff and faculty in a hierarchical manner, with no Asian representation at the Vice President or Provost level. Overall, examining leadership positions at UT from 2008-2018 shows a low representation of Asian leadership and retention efforts. For instance, in 2017 and 2018, only one Asian administrator held a leadership position at the Dean/Associate Dean level.
