ALDPES NEWSLETTER

Wednesday, March 1st, 2017

Alpha Lambda Delta | Phi Eta Sigma

The University of Texas at Austin Chapter

Hey ALDPES-ers,

Things are wrapping up a bit for now as we approach spring break. We have one more meeting left before the break and just a few point opportunities, so check those out if you want to get some points!

One quick note: we have a new point policy (included below). If you sign up for a service event and then fail to show up without telling us beforehand, then you will lose a point from now on. It takes a lot of work to coordinate these service events, and many times we have to provide a headcount before we go. Thanks!

Our next meeting will be next Wednesday, March 8th in WEL 3.502 from 6:00 – 7:00PM. (This will be the time and location for the rest of the semester) Only a week and a half left, we can make it!

Best,

Alan Stepchinski

Alpha Lambda Delta Secretary

Fun Fact of the Week:

The word “soccer” was created in the last 1800’s when rugby players in Europe decided to shorten “Association Football”. However, the reason Americans are too stubborn to call soccer by its proper name is still a mystery.

Upcoming Guest Speakers

March 8th – Texas Kids Read (again!)

Learn about a great service opportunity on campus! (They promise they won’t forget this time =P)

March 22nd – UT Magic Club

Get ready to feel the magic (Alex made this pun, not me)

April 5th – Possibly Beauties and the Beat (featuring our very own Heather Grosenbacher!!!!)

Lingering Opportunities: Duckie’s Dreams

Seton Hospital Internship

If you are interested in a full time internship (unpaid…sorry!) at a Seton Hospital this summer that would consist of working with hospital volunteers (great for people interested in community outreach/people management or anyone just looking to get a foot in the door in the medical field), send me an email at luketerry@utexas.edu.

Family Orientation Student Coordinator

The Texas Parents organization is looking for students to work at Family Orientation on day 1 of New Student Orientation. The program introduces families to UT Austin and to resources that support their students’ transition to UT. Texas Parents has reached out specifically to ALDPES with this opportunity. Applications close this Friday, March 3rd (sorry the deadline is so close; we just heard about this). Visit the Texas Parents website https://texasparents.org/jobs for job details and the application.

Chipotle Profit Share

On Friday April 21 from 5-9 pm we’ll be having a Profit Share at Chipotle!!!!!! Chipotle is giving us 50% (you read that right!) of whatever we buy so make sure to put this in your calendar! Get a point (or two), make some money, and eat some food amongst fellow ALDPESers and the like! Invite everyone you know because this is the big one that you won’t want to miss!

Points

Points are here! Please email the account (utaldpes@gmail.com) if you have any questions or concerns.

New members: You may not see your name on the list yet, but be patient. We add names to the sheet once you have earned a point by going to an event. It may take us a few days to update the points sheet after meetings/events.

Jo Anne J. Trow Scholarship

$1,000-6,000 for members inducted in 2016 (sorry oldtimers). The application can found attached here and at the link.

http://www.nationalald.org/trow/

***DISCLAIMER*** You may notice that the deadlines stated here do not match the deadlines stated on the application links. This is because many of these applications have to go through the officer board and advisers before being submitted to national. Please go by the deadline I’ve given so we have plenty of time to review and select the applications.

Quick note from Heather

If you know of a professor who would make a great speaker at induction, please email us with their info!

Other Things

Scrapbook

We are always working on the scrapbook for ALDPES. If you attend any social or service event this semester or cherish a specific meeting speaker/ice breaker, email ALDPES a two to three sentence quote for half a point! Also, if you send in four quality photos you can receive another half point!

UTALDPES Follow Train

If you follow @UTALDPES on Twitter you can earn a half point. And you can also earn a half point for following utaldpes on Instagram. For those who struggle with math, that means you can earn 1 point for following both! (Points will be awarded the last week of class.)

T-shirt special

Buy one red shirt for $10! Come by any office hours to purchase shirts. (Remember cash can only be accepted at the Treasurer’s office hours though!)

Graduation Cords

Cords are $26 for active members and $36 for inactive members (this is for both ALD and PES; individually cords are $13 for active members and $18 for inactive members). Come by any office hours to purchase. (Remember cash can only be accepted at the Treasurers’ office hours though!)

Credit Cards

Credit cards are now being accepted! Stop by any of the officer’s office hours to pay by credit card. Be warned: there is a convenience fee! Prices for payment by credit cards are $10.28 per shirt, $13.37 per cord if you’re active, or $26.74 for both cords, and $18.51 per cord if you’re inactive, or $37.02 for both cords.
