ALDPES NEWSLETTER

Alpha Lambda Delta | Phi Eta Sigma

The University of Texas at Austin Chapter

Hey ALDPES-ers,

There are tons of events coming up in the next two weeks, so now is the perfect time to knock out some points if you have time!

Induction is this Saturday, March 25th at 5:00 pm in the Union Ballroom! We hope to see all you new members there as we celebrate your accomplishments at UT thus far and officially induct you as members of our honor societies! (If you can’t make it that’s okay! You will still be considered a member.)

Our next meeting will be two weeks from now, Wednesday April 5th in WEL 3.502 from 6:00 – 7:00PM.

Best,

Alan Stepchinski

Alpha Lambda Delta Secretary

Fun Fact of the Week:

As many people know, bagels are traditionally a breakfast food and not a dessert. While they may be high in carbohydrates, you can increase the nutritional content of your bagel by adding peanut butter for protein and fruits or vegetables for a more balanced meal. Additionally, many bagel stores have whole-grain options which contain fiber.

Upcoming Guest Speakers

April 5th – Hopefully Beauties and the Beat (featuring our very own Heather Grosenbacher!!!!)

Further in the future – GMT and Therapy Dogs!!!

Guests of Speakers Past

March 22nd – UT Magic Club

UT Magic Club was AMAZING and I’m sorry if you had to miss out on this. If you would like to know more about the club, check out their website here. Hopefully we can get them to come again next semester!

March 8th – Texas Kids Read on campus

Texas Kids Read is an organization which cleans up and distributes books to elementary schools to help improve access to literature. There is now a branch of TKR on UT campus!

Lingering Opportunities: Duckie’s Dreams

Study Hours

You need to study, right? Why not get some easy points for ALDPES while you study? Your favorite two secretaries will be holding study hours at PCL 4.120B from 6:00 – 9:00 pm next Thursday, March 30. (There will be cookies!)

Bridging the Gap

BTG is our annual philanthropy event raising money and awareness for organizations that help bridge the gap in education. This year, we will be partnering with Breakthrough Austin. We will hold a silent auction event on April 20th in the SAC. You can earn points by helping with set up, break down, creating decorations, attending the event with three other non-ALDPES people, and through promoting the event on social media!

Seton Hospital Internship

If you are interested in a full time internship (unpaid…sorry!) at a Seton Hospital this summer that would consist of working with hospital volunteers (great for people interested in community outreach/people management or anyone just looking to get a foot in the door in the medical field), send me an email at luketerry@utexas.edu.

Chipotle Profit Share

On Friday April 21 from 5-9 pm we’ll be having a Profit Share at Chipotle!!!!!! Chipotle is giving us50% (you read that right!) of whatever we buy so make sure to put this in your calendar! Get a point (or two), make some money, and eat some food amongst fellow ALDPES-ers and the like! Invite everyone you know because this is the big one that you won’t want to miss!

Points

Points are here! Please email the account (utaldpes@gmail.com) if you have any questions or concerns.

New members: You may not see your name on the list yet, but be patient. We add names to the sheet once you have earned a point by going to an event. It may take us a few days to update the points sheet after meetings/events.

Scholarships

Princeton Review Scholarship

There will be a scholarship available in the future. For now, all ALDPES members can receive a $200 discount on a Princeton Review package. Don’t miss out on this if you’re planning to use Princeton Review!

Jo Anne J. Trow Scholarship

Deadline: 3/27/17

$1,000-6,000 for members inducted in 2016 (sorry oldtimers). The application can found attached here and at the link.

http://www.nationalald.org/trow/

***DISCLAIMER*** You may notice that the deadlines stated here do not match the deadlines stated on the application links. This is because many of these applications have to go through the officer board and advisers before being submitted to national. Please go by the deadline I’ve given so we have plenty of time to review and select the applications.

Other Things

Scrapbook

We are always working on the scrapbook for ALDPES. If you attend any social or service event this semester or cherish a specific meeting speaker/ice breaker, email ALDPES a two to three sentence quote for half a point! Also, if you send in four quality photos you can receive another half point!

UTALDPES Follow Train

If you follow @UTALDPES on Twitter you can earn a half point. And you can also earn a half point for following utaldpes on Instagram. For those who struggle with math, that means you can earn 1 point for following both! (Points will be awarded the last week of class.)

T-shirt special

Buy one red shirt for $10! Come by any office hours to purchase shirts. (Remember cash can only be accepted at the Treasurer’s office hours though!)

Graduation Cords

Cords are $26 for active members and $36 for inactive members (this is for both ALD and PES; individually cords are $13 for active members and $18 for inactive members). Come by any office hours to purchase. (Remember cash can only be accepted at the Treasurers’ office hours though!)

Credit Cards

Credit cards are now being accepted! Stop by any of the officer’s office hours to pay by credit card. Be warned: there is a convenience fee! Prices for payment by credit cards are $10.28 per shirt, $13.37 per cord if you’re active, or $26.74 for both cords, and $18.51 per cord if you’re inactive, or $37.02 for both cords.
