Mary K. Wakefield, PhD, RN, FAAN, who served in the Obama administration as acting United States Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services from 2015 to 2017, and as head of the Health Resources and Services Administration from 2009 to 2015, will host a seminar series during the spring 2018 semester on “Healthcare Policy: Lessons Learned from the Beltway”.
Dr. Wakefield, visiting Professor and Distinguished Fellow of the Joseph H. Blades Centennial Memorial Professorship in Nursing and Dean’s Distinguished Fellow at the LBJ School of Public Affairs, will present four seminars:
Seminar 1: January 25, 2018
Orientation to the fundamental structures and processes of federal health policymaking, including various vested interests in healthcare policy debates.
Seminar 2: February 15, 2018
The interface between health systems and health policy aimed at improving access to care for certain populations (i.e., rural, low-income) through telemedicine (virtual access to care) and expansion through the Affordable Care Act of the community health centers program and the National Health Service Corps. The impact of the health center and NHSC programs in Texas will be incorporated to illustrate local impact of federal policy decisions.
Seminar 3: March 22, 2018
Health policies designed to impact selected populations and decrease healthcare costs, including the role of Medicaid in meeting the needs of underserved populations and the fiscal implications of the Medicaid program.
Seminar 4: April 12, 2018
Global health priorities and health policy with emphasis on the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.
