In its 2014 operating plan, the Department of Labor Women’s Bureau named female veterans as a vulnerable population and a top priority due in large part to high rates of joblessness and homelessness. Research shows that this “vulnerability” is experienced during service, and often is characteristic of these women’s lives pre-enlistment.
As members of Dr. Jacqueline Angel’s LBJ School seminar “Women and the Changing World of Work,” the authors of these columns met with the DOL Women’s Bureau and conducted a systematic and analytic review of the literature on a selection of the many complex issues surrounding women at three stages of military service. These columns are adapted from the authors’ presentation at the Center for Women and Gender Studies 21st annual Emerging Scholars Conference.
