Workshop Overview
The Art of Band Conducting and Rehearsing Workshop will take place at the Butler School of Music on the campus of UT Austin. Planned in-person activities will include: conducting the UT Summer Chamber Winds, panel discussions, and lecture sessions highlighting literature, score study, rehearsal techniques, ensemble motivation, conducting technique, building relationships, and personal musical growth.

Cost
IMPORTANT: All Conducting Participants are selected through a screening process and will be notified of their acceptance. Observer slots are open to all and are not screened. At the end of registration, a credit card is required to confirm your position. You may elect to pay in full or make two partial payments (50% due immediately + 50% due at a later date) to attend the workshop.
Conducting Participants will be notified of their acceptance by the third week of March. Once you are approved after the application and video screening process, you will receive an email to confirm your attendance as a Conducting Participant. If you are not selected as a Conducting Participant, you will be encouraged to attend as an Observer.
$750 for Conducting Participants (in-person only) – registration window: Jan. 16 – Feb. 7

- Attend lecture and discussion sessions
- Observe remaining conducting participants
- Receive 50 minutes (total) of conducting time and one-on-one video feedback
$450.00 for Observers (in-person only) – registration window: Jan. 16- May 31
- Observe and attend conducting, lecture and discussion sessions
- Opportunity to develop, refine, and nurture individual conducting and rehearsing techniques through observation, personal note taking, and reflection
Note: The Conducting Participant and Observer fees only cover attendance for the workshop. This fee does not include meals, lodging, parking, or travel. A virtual option as a Conducting Participant or an Observer will not be offered. All participants must plan accordingly.

Enrollment Information
Potential participants must include both a CV/Resume (PDF: first name initial and full last name-CV / BEary-CV) and a shareable link to a 10-minute video containing a full run-through of a piece or movement. Interested attendees will upload a CV and video link to the application once the registration link opens (see registration below). Conducting Participant submissions will be reviewed immediately and accepted until February 7. We will notify participants of their status by the third week of March.

Score Purchase
Workshop participants can purchase scores from Midwest Sheet Music. Select the UT Austin Conducting Workshop, and select the scores you wish to purchase.
Hotel and Lodging
We encourage all workshop participants to research hotel and lodging options in the Austin area, preferably near the university. You will want to book your reservation as soon as notified of your acceptance. Please view hotel information on the Austin Convention & Visitors Bureau website.
Parking
If you need to park on campus, we recommend parking in the San Jacinto Parking Garage right across from the Butler School of Music ($3 per hour/$18 per day).
Optional Event (additional $45)
Celebration Dinner Cruise
Join us on Wednesday, June 19 from 6:30 – 9:30 pm for an evening of fellowship, fun, and dinner as we cruise for 3-hours on Lady Bird Lake, nestled in the heart of Austin. We will enjoy hors d’oeuvres, fajitas, dessert, and a variety of beverages. We will also observe the sunset and may see the bat emergence; it’s quite a unique and popular experience in Austin. Please dress in any comfortable or casual attire. Save your ballroom attire for another time. We’re looking forward to seeing and fellowshipping with you!
Custom Batons
If you are interested in testing out or purchasing a baton, Chris Blount, owner of Custom Batons, Inc., will attend the conducting workshop. Custom Batons offer various handle shapes, shaft options, handle selections, and durable cases. If you do not find what you are looking for during the workshop, Chris can always create a custom order typically completed in 1-2 weeks.

Registration opens at 10:00 a.m. CST on January 16 and closes on February 7 (for Conducting Participants) and May 31 (for observers). A registration link will be shared on this website and on our social platforms for all interested in applying.
