APPLICATION DEADLINES

Undergradaute

The University admissions office is strict with the application deadline, and will deny admission to any student whose file is incomplete on that date. It is to your advantage to submit application materials early, and double and triple check to make sure they are in your file by the deadline. In addition to the University application, please complete the School of Music application. You must be admitted to both the university and the School of Music in order to attend the University as a music major.

Graduate

The application deadline is less strict for graduate students, but meeting the deadline ensures full consideration for admission and scholarships.

Admissions Decisions

Admissions, assistantship and scholarship decisions will be made starting in the end of February, so it is advisable to audition by the end of that month. You are encouraged to attend one of the School of Music’s official audition days, but if you have conflicts, please contact me to arrange a private appointment.

Visit our Admissions page for more information.

Non-Majors

If you do not plan on majoring in music, but would like to continue playing bassoon at the University, we encourage you to audition for ensembles, and to take lessons for credit.

Ensemble Auditions

Auditions take place during the first three days of class in August. The top players from the audition will be chosen for the rotation between the Symphony Orchestra, Opera Orchestra, New Music Ensemble, and Wind Ensemble which all rehearse Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 12:00 to 2:00. The Wind Symphony and Symphony Band rehearse Monday, Wednesday, Friday 2:00 to 4:00.

Auditions for the University Orchestra (this group is comprised of mostly non-music majors) are separate. UO rehearses Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Sign-up for an audition time on the orchestra board in MBE.

Audition Requirements can be found on the Ensemble Auditions page.

Private Lessons

If you would like to take lessons, please arrange to play for Professor Jensen before the add/drop period ends. You may choose to visit in the spring or summer before school begins, or to make an appointment during the first week of class. Lessons are 2 credits (BSN 201). Registration for lessons is restricted, meaning, you need to submit an online request through the Music Student Office Registrar, which will route to Professor Jensen, who can approve your registration for bassoon lessons.

The UT School of Music does not have scholarships available for non-music majors.

INSTRUMENTS

Students are encouraged to purchase their own instrument if possible, but if you do not yet have one when you enroll in an ensemble or lessons, you may borrow one. Contact Professor Jensen to arrange this.
