This semester, with the support of the Center for American Music, world renown Flutist Julie Koidin will be joining the MUS 312C with her Brazilian chorol music ensemble Choro Do Sol, for showcasing the uniqueness of Brazilian chorol music with performances and interactions with the students.
During her visit, the class will have an open-to-all “roda de choro” – or a “choro jam session.” All students are invited to sit in and play with the ensemble. The goal is for students to experience what it’s like to exchange musical dialogue choro-style in a circle setting.
Choro is a wonderful meeting place between musicians trained in jazz and classical music – and other styles as well. There will be charts for the students to read in keys of C, Bb and Eb – and lyrics if any singers want to join in.
A native of the Chicago area, Julie Koidin is a classically trained flutist, and is an experienced soloist, studio, orchestral and chamber musician. As a soloist, she has appeared with the Conservatorio del Tolima Orchestra (Colombia), the Millennium Chamber Orchestra (Chicago) and the Volta Redondo Orchestra (Brazil) as well as given numerous solo recitals in concert with pianists such as Maria Teresa Madeira, Durval Cesetti, and Rick Ferguson.
