Dr. Josh Shepperd is the first guest speaker for the 2022 fall semester. He is the Assistant Professor of media studies at the University of Colorado Boulder, where he teaches media policy, theory, activism, sound and archival methods courses. His research focuses on parallels between critical media theory and critical intervention in media practice. His book Shadow of the New Deal: The Victory of Public Broadcasting (University of Illinois Press, 2023) is an early public media framework for media reform movements to improve equal access to education through technology. Dr. Shepperd also conducts the Library of Congress “Sound Submissions Project,” a public history and sound studies program of the Library of Congress Recorded Sound Section and National Recording Preservation Board. With the Center for American Music sponsor, Dr. Shepperd will present “Sound Research at the Library of Congress NRPB”.Words from Dr. Shepperd: This talk frames the new Library of Congress “Sound Submissions Program” as an extension of discourses between academic, federal, and philanthropic sectors at the Library of Congress National Recording Preservation Board. It looks at how the logistics of memory research are changing due to the Music Modernization Act legislation and discusses how sound preservation initiatives are contributing to historiographical debates in film, media, and archival studies.
