Results from a displacement controlled uniaxial tension test of a thin strip of fine grained steel.
Photographic sequence of the evolution of Lüders strain (shown in 14 second intervals). Lighter color represents Lüders deformed material and darker color represents relatively undeformed material. The position of the front was used to generate the x-t diagram above.
Numerical simulations of the propagation of Lüders Bands were also performed and can be seen using the links below. The colors represent the amount of axial strain and highlight the Lüvders deformed and the relatively undeformed regions present in the strip. The first movie shows the propagation of a single Lüders front while the second shows the simultaneous propagation of two fronts. The instability is initiated from small initial imperfections in the sides of the strips.
