Crack Front Morphology in Layered Materials

Alex Moberg – Aarhus University, Denmark

The morphologies of the fronts of cracks in layered materials are studied using a numerical model of a cantilever plate and analysed using linear elastic fracture mechanics. A special purpose linear finite element model of the cantilever plate has been developed using Mindlin’s plate elements. The crack front morphology is studied for both homogeneous and heterogeneous interfaces. In order to validate the model, results have been compared to earlier experiments by Budzik.
