Presentation: Navigation of Healthcare System: A Patient and Peer Recovery Specialist Perspective

Joe Powell is a person in long term recovery with 31 years and has been the President/CEO of the Association of Persons Affected by Addiction in Dallas for 21 years. He is a member of the Texas Certification Board. The certification board oversees State certifications including Mental Health Peer Specialist and Recovery Support Peer Specialist. He is a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor and is member of the Texas Association of Addiction Professionals. Mr. Powell is one of the founding board members for the National Faces and Voices of Recovery in Washington D.C.

Additionally, he is an advisory council member for the National Southwest Addiction Technology Transfer Center, a member of the Eastfield Community College Advisory Board, and a planning partner of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and Recovery Month Planning Partners. He was selected and served on the Health and Human Services (HHSC/CMS) Medicaid Reimbursement Workgroup for Peer Services in 2018. Powell attended Eastfield College and Amber University for social work and substance use and has been a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor for 25 years. This year Joe Powell was the Chair for the Big Texas Rally for Recovery 2019.
