The 2015 CESS convention offers a unique insight into the
Central Eurasian studies field!
The convention will hold 60 panels, from political science, sociology and anthropology, to history and literature. It will cover the five post-Soviet Central Asian states, the Caucasus, Xinjiang, Afghanistan, and Russian Muslim regions. The Mongolia Society will hold its own convention parallel to the CESS, in order to foster integration of Mongolian studies into the Central Eurasian field.
The convention will feature two keynote speakers, Alexander Cooley, from Columbia University, addressing “Locating Central Asian Geopolitics: the Rise and Future Decline of Multivectorism in Practice”, and Madeleine Reeves, from Manchester University, assessing “Trace, Trajectory, Pressure Point: Re-imagining ‘Area Studies’ in an Age of Migration”.
Cultural activities will also be offered during the conference, including:
Central Asian cinema, musical performances, and fairy tales.
A Central Asian food fair with stands organized by the Embassies and the diasporas, to interact with the Central Asian world of Washington, DC.
An exhibition, “Old Patterns, New Order. Socialist Realism in Central Asia,” presenting unique collections of 20th century painting and 19th century textiles, organized in partnership with the GW Museum.
