Foreign Service ELOs are responsible for all Department of State-sponsored English teaching activities in a specific country, or as a Regional ELO with responsibilities for English language program activities in several countries, necessitating extensive travel. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, at least 20 years old to apply and at least 21 years of age to be appointed. By law, all career candidates must be appointed to the Foreign Service prior to the month in which they reach age 60, except for preference eligible veterans.
