Fellowship: REEI FLAS Applications (Indiana University)

Deadline: Ongoing

The Russian and East European Institute (REEI) of Indiana University (IU) expects to receive supplementary funds that may enable it to make additional Foreign Language and Area Studies awards in support of students who enroll at the IU Summer Language Workshop (http://www.indiana.edu/~swseel/) for Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Estonian, Hungarian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Russian, and Ukrainian language study. For this reason, the FLAS application website has been reopened for those who were unable to submit an application by the priority deadline of February 1.

FLAS Application Process:
Students are required to send the following materials to the appropriate world area center contact:
  • One copy of the application for Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships (which includes in it a personal Statement on Language Training and Proposed Program of Study)
  • One complete set of official transcripts of college and university credits or high school transcripts for high school applicants
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • All applicants must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application and request to have the results sent to Indiana University. Choose the 2015-2016 FAFSA for Summer 2016 and the 2016-2017 FAFSA for the 2016-2017 Academic Year

To fill out the application, you MUST have an IU Central Authentication Service (CAS) login. If you are not an IU student, please create a guest account to get access.

The deadline for receipt of all materials concerning the application for FLAS Fellowships varies by center, so check each center carefully for its own deadlines. Send your application materials to the world area center(s) in which the language you propose to study is listed. Please see Contact Us for all center complete contact information.

Please remember that the selection of FLAS recipients is a competitive process. That means you must have a complete packet, delivered within the deadline, with all documents submitted of the highest quality, in order to ensure your best chance of selection.

Students who wish to apply for a FLAS fellowship for a second language should address the need for both languages in their personal statement and bring to attention of the FLAS coordinator(s) for the center or centers that cover the languages in question: Maria Grosz-Ngate, African Studies (mgrosz@indiana.edu), Kasia Rydel-Johnston, IAUNRC (krydeljo@indiana.edu), or Mark Trotter, REEI (martrott@indiana.edu).

We strongly recommend that you contact appropriate FLAS coordinators well in advance of the application deadline.  Failure to do so may complicate the review of your application.

For general FLAS questions, check the FAQ page. If you do not see an answer to your question, please email the contact at the relevant center or check the U.S. Department of Education FLAS Web site.
