Since 1983, the Kellogg Institute for International Studies has offered visiting fellowships to promote interdisciplinary international research in a supportive community of scholars. This widely respected residential program offers you time to pursue scholarly inquiry where it takes you, advance your personal research, and collaborate with other scholars and practitioners from across the US and around the globe.

As a visiting fellow, you pursue research related to Kellogg Institute themes of democracy and human development, share your research with the Notre Dame scholarly community, and have the opportunity to publish in Kellogg’s peer-reviewed Working Paper Series.

Who is Eligible?

We invite applications from scholars and practitioners who conduct international research on our themes of democracy and/or human development. Applicants may come from any country and typically fall into three groups:

  • Promising junior and midcareer scholars (typically postdocs and assistant or associate professors)
  • Distinguished senior scholars with an established record of scholarly excellence
  • Accomplished policy makers, journalists, and other practitioners whose knowledge and experience can link policy and scholarship

Acad. Job: Assistant Professor of Russian Language (Vanderbilt University)

The Department of German, Russian, and East European Studies invites applications for an Assistant Professor of the Practice in Russian Language to join our expanding interdisciplinary department. This is a full-time, renewable, non-tenure track position with an initial term of three years.  Our ideal candidate will be skilled in Communicative Language Teaching practices. The successful candidate will serve as the Russian language program coordinator, will conduct Russian language instruction at all levels, and will coordinate study abroad and other immersion opportunities.

Acad. Job: Alpha Fellowship (Moscow)

The Alfa Fellowship Program is a distinguished international initiative that each year offers up to 18 accomplished young Americans, Britons, and Germans the opportunity to complete a high-level professional development program in Russia. Since 2004, the program has enabled over 180 emerging leaders to gain professional experience at leading organizations in business, media, law, policy, and other related areas through this 11-month, fully-funded fellowship in Moscow.

The Alfa Fellowship Program begins with language training in the fellow’s geographic location followed by a language course in Moscow starting in mid-June. Throughout the summer, Alfa Fellows attend a seminar program with key public and private sector officials to discuss current affairs in Russia. Fellows then work at prominent organizations, including private companies, media outlets, think tanks, and foundations. Trips to cities in the region are interspersed throughout the program year. The in-country portion of the program lasts from mid-June until late April.

Eligible candidates must have a bachelor degree and professional experience in business, economics, journalism, law, public policy, or a related field. Russian language proficiency is not required, but is preferred. The Fellowship includes a generous monthly stipend, language training, program-related travel costs, housing, and insurance.

Acad. Job: Wayne Vucinich Fellowship (Stanford)

The Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies (CREEES) at Stanford University invites applications for the Wayne Vucinich Fellowship.

This is a 12-week residential fellowship to be offered in the period between January 13-June 19, 2020 (actual dates of residence will be determined in consultation with the selected fellow). The fellowship is open to scholars in any discipline whose research focuses on historical or contemporary topics in Russia, East Europe, the Caucasus, or Central Asia.  Scholars who have received the PhD within the past five years are eligible to apply. (A PhD in hand is required at the time the residency begins.) Preference will be given to scholars who are residents of countries that fall under the direct purview of the Center: Russia, East Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia.

During the fellowship period, the Vucinich Fellow is expected to pursue independent research in residence and to participate actively in the scholarly activities of the Center. The fellow will hold a lecture, seminar, or workshop on their research. The fellow will have access to Stanford University Libraries and the use of a shared work space at the Center.

The fellowship award funds international travel, health insurance, and a visa, in addition to a $12,000 stipend for living expenses.

Acad. Job: Tenure-Track Asst. Professor of Russian Studies (University of Colorado, Boulder)

The Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures at University of Colorado, Boulder seeks a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Russian Studies, starting August 2020. Candidates should have a strong publication record/research agenda and be able to contribute to the department’s growing MA program in Russian Studies. The successful candidate will have experience teaching English-speaking students and the ability to engage a broadly diverse student population. Area of specialization is twentieth- and twenty-first-century Russian culture, with emphasis on post-Soviet and contemporary Russian culture. Teaching load is 2 courses per semester.

Acad. Job: Modern Jewish Culture and History (University of Chicago)

The University of Chicago seeks scholars in Modern Jewish Culture and History, with an emphasis on 19th/20th-Century Europe, for an appointment date of July 1, 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter. We welcome applications at the assistant professor, associate professor, and full professor rank.  This is an inter-divisional search and candidates may come from any relevant discipline.  Preference will be given to applicants who have knowledge of Hebrew, Yiddish, or Ladino.  Successful candidates will be placed in the appropriate department in the Division of the Social Sciences, the Division of Humanities, or the Divinity School, where they will contribute to both the undergraduate and graduate programs, including regularly offering an undergraduate course on the history of the Shoah.  It is expected that they will participate actively in the Greenberg Center for Jewish Studies.

Fellowship: Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellowship (National Endowment for Democracy)

Named in honor of NED’s principal founders, former president Ronald Reagan and the late congressman Dante Fascell (D-Fl.), the Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellows Program is a federally funded, international exchange program that offers democracy activists, journalists, civil society leaders, and scholars from around the world the opportunity to spend five months in residence at the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), in Washington, D.C., in order to undertake independent research on democracy in a particular country or region. Located within NED’s INTERNATIONAL FORUM FOR DEMOCRATIC STUDIES, a leading center for analysis of global democratic developments, the program provides a collegial environment and rich intellectual setting for educational exchange and professional development.

The program offers five-month fellowships for practitioners to improve strategies and techniques for building democracy abroad and five-month fellowships for scholars to conduct original research for publication. While in residence, fellows reflect on their experiences; engage with counterparts; conduct research and writing; consider best practices and lessons learned; and develop professional relationships within a global network of democracy advocates. Fellows are expected to complete a written product relating to their proposed research project. The fellowship culminates in a formal presentation in which fellows typically focus on their research project or another topic relating to the state of democracy in their country.

Slavic Languages and Literatures

The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures seeks applications for a College Fellow in Russian Language and Literature. The appointment is expected to begin on September 1, 2019. The College Fellow will have teaching responsibilities, with 25 percent of the appointment reserved for the Fellow’s own research. Teaching duties will include three courses or the equivalent: two courses or the equivalent at any level in the Russian language program and a tutorial for concentrators in Russian literature. The Fellow may also be asked to advise and evaluate senior theses as a regular part of their responsibilities.

The appointment is for one year, with the possibility of renewal for a second year, contingent on performance, position availability, curricular need, and divisional dean authorization.
