Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in History of Art

With the sponsorship of the Society for the Humanities, the Department of History of Art invites applications for a two-year Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship position beginning July 1, 2018. The fellowship offers a stipend of $50,000/year.

We are seeking applicants who are specialists in the in the field of 20th-century Europe and North America, spanning the years 1914-1991, with particular emphasis on art between WWI and WWII. The History of Art department’s strength lies in its pioneering global focus. A successful candidate would be able to dialogue with other faculty members’ global concerns.

Postdoctoral Fellows teach one course per semester (four different courses over two years). Candidates should propose an introductory, 2000-level course and an upper, 4000-level course. These courses should be conceived of as smaller seminars and their topics should fall within the field of 20th-century European and North American art.

Academic Job: Jean Monnet Postdoctoral Fellowships (RSCAS)

The Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies (RSCAS) offers one-year Jean Monnet Fellowships to scholars who have obtained their doctorate more than 5 years prior to the start of the fellowship, i.e. 1 September 2018 for the academic year 2018-19. The Fellowship programme is open to post-docs, tenure track academics and those wishing to spend their sabbatical at the Robert Schuman Centre. We invite you to become part of a lively and creative academic community. The Centre offers up to 20 Fellowships a year.

Jean Monnet Fellows are selected on the basis of a research proposal and of their CV. The research proposal should fit well with one of the Centre’s main research themes, programmes and projects. The three main research themes of the RSCAS are:

  • Integration, Governance and Democracy;
  • Regulating Markets and Governing Money; and
  • 21st Century World Politics and Europe.

  • Stipend: $55,000, plus up to $3,000 for research costs and related scholarly activities
  • Fellowships may be held at the awardee’s home institution, one of three partnering universities, or any location suitable for the proposed research.
  • Awardees electing to relocate to take up residence at one of three university partners will receive an additional stipend of up to $10,000
  • Tenure: one academic year

Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Completion Fellowships

The online fellowship and grant administration (OFA) system is now open for applications.

Fellowship Details

  • Stipend: $30,000, plus funds for research costs of up to $3,000 and for university fees of up to $5,000
  • Tenure: one year beginning summer 2018
  • Completed applications must be submitted through the ACLS online fellowship administration system (ofa.acls.org) no later than 9 pm Eastern Daylight Time, October 25, 2017.
  • Notifications will be sent via email in late March 2018.

The information below is a summary of the program, and details eligibility, application requirements, and evaluation criteria for the program. Please read carefully through the material and accompanying FAQ.

Summary

ACLS invites applications for Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Completion Fellowships, which support a year of research and writing to help advanced graduate students in the humanities and related social sciences in the last year of PhD dissertation writing. The program encourages timely completion of the PhD. Applicants must be prepared to complete their dissertations within the period of their fellowship tenure and no later than August 31, 2019. A grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation supports this program.

ACLS will award 65 fellowships in this competition for a one-year term beginning between June and September 2018 for the 2018-19 academic year. The fellowship may be carried out in residence at the fellow’s home institution, abroad, or at another appropriate site for the research. These fellowships may not be held concurrently with any other fellowship or grant.

The total award of up to $38,000 includes a stipend plus additional funds for university fees and research support. In addition to the monetary support that the fellowship offers, Dissertation Completion Fellows are able to apply to participate in a seminar on preparing for the academic job market.  The seminar takes place over three days in the fall of the fellowship year.

Funding: Samuel H. Kress Fellowship (Fitch Foundation)

Deadline for Applications: October 25, 2017

Research grants of up to $15,000 will be awarded to one mid-career professional whose research project relates to the appreciation, interpretation, preservation, study and teaching of European art, architecture and related disciplines from antiquity to the early 19th century, in the context of historic preservation in the United States. Potential Kress Fellow projects could include the exploration of shared European and American influences in style, design, materials, construction techniques, building types, conservation and interpretation methodologies, philosophical and theoretical attitudes, and other factors applicable to preservation in both Europe and America.

Funding for the Kress Fellowship is made possible through the generous support of the Samuel H. Kress Foundation.

Criteria for Evaluation

Applications are reviewed by the Fitch Trustees. Projects will be evaluated on the following criteria:

  • The project will make a meaningful contribution to the academic and/or professional field of historic preservation in the United States
  • The applicant has a realistic plan for the dissemination of research and/or final work product
  • The project has a clear and realistic goals, timeframe, work plan, and budget
  • The project demonstrates innovative thinking, original research and creative problem solving and/or design

Funding: Truman Scholarship (UT-Austin)

The University of Texas at Austin’s Harry S. Truman Selection Committee invites students to consider applying for a 2018 Truman Scholarship.  Applicants should be graduating either in Fall 2018 or Spring 2019 and should have a 3.75 GPA or higher. 

The Truman Scholarship is a $32,000 merit-based grant awarded to undergraduate students who wish to attend graduate or professional school in preparation for careers in government, the non-profit sector, or elsewhere in public service.

Given the demands of the application and application process, we have found that the sooner you learn about the scholarship the more successful your application is likely to be.  The Truman Scholarship has a website where students can read all necessary information.  Students apply for the scholarship as juniors; that is, if you plan to graduate in May of 2019, this is the year for you to apply for the Truman.  The deadline for applications to the University Selection Committee will be Friday, October 27, 2017.  The University may nominate up to four candidates for national competition.   

The Truman application is online and is now available.  If you are interested in applying, you will need to let the chair, Douglas Bruster (bruster@austin.utexas.edu) know, and he will register you with the Truman Foundation, enabling you to have access to the application.  Your recommenders should send their letters of recommendation to him (bruster@austin.utexas.edu) electronically in a word document.

Douglas Bruster would be happy to answer questions you may have about the Truman Scholarship.  He holds regular office hours on Mondays and Wednesdays between 10:00-11:30 a.m. in Parlin Hall 220.

Funding Opportunity: Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellowship (NED)

Summary
Named in honor of NED’s principal founders, former president Ronald Reagan and the late congressman Dante Fascell (D-Fl.), the Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellows Program is a federally funded, international exchange program that offers practitioners, scholars, and journalists from around the world the opportunity to spend five months in residence at the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), in Washington, D.C., in order to undertake independent research on democracy in a particular country or region. Located within NED’s International Forum for Democratic Studies, the program provides a rich intellectual setting for educational exchange and professional development. While in residence, fellows reflect on their experiences; engage with counterparts; conduct research and writing; consider best practices and lessons learned; and develop professional relationships within a global network of democracy advocates.

American Association of University Women (AAUW) Austin Branch Fellowships for Doctoral Candidates at The University of Texas at Austin –2018-2019 Academic Year

AAUW Austin Branch will award 1-3 fellowships this year, each in the amount of at least $2,000,
to female doctoral candidates. This award has been established to assist women who require
financial aid to complete their doctoral program. A prerequisite for consideration for the
Fellowship is doctoral committee approval of the dissertation proposal. The Fellowship Selection Committee expects that announcement of the awards will be made by April 13, 2018.

Funding: NEH Fellowship for Senior Scholars, Faculty (Center for Jewish History)

The Center offers a fellowship to senior scholars through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The award supports original research at the Center in the humanities, including but not limited to Jewish studies, Russian and East European studies, American studies and Germanic studies, as well as musicology, linguistics, anthropology, sociology and history. Applications are welcome from college and university faculty in any field who have completed a PhD more than six years prior to the start of the fellowship and whose research will benefit considerably from consultation with materials in the collections of the Center’s partners – American Jewish Historical Society, American Sephardi Federation, Leo Baeck Institute, Yeshiva University Museum, and YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. Fellowships carry a stipend of up to $50,400 for a period of one year. Fellows are expected to conduct original research at the Center, deliver at least one lecture based on the research conducted, actively participate in the scholarly community at the Center, acknowledge the Center and NEH in all publications resulting from research completed during the fellowship, and submit a report upon completion of the fellowship describing the experience.
