Funding: Visiting Scholar Fellowship (IMSISS-CES)

The IMSISS-CES Visiting Scholar Fellowship provides mobility funding to CES Research Network members to undertake a visit of up to 2 weeks at one of the three IMSISS consortium institutions: The University of Glasgow (UK), Dublin City University (Ireland), or Charles University Prague (Czech Republic).

IMSISS is an international consortium of universities and non-academic partners funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ programme to deliver an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree (EMJMD) in Security, Intelligence and Strategic Studies. The IMSISS consortium is coordinated by the University of Glasgow. CES is an associate partner of the consortium. 

Note: This is an opportunity open exclusively to members of CES’ Research Networks.

National Security Career Event

Interested in a job in the fields of national security policy, intelligence, diplomacy, military, or federal law enforcement? Recruiting officials from U.S. national security departments and agencies will be available to students throughout the day to discuss internship, part-time, and full-time employment opportunities. Confirmed participants include: CIA, FBI, State Department, Army Futures Command, National Counterterrorism Center, Defense Intelligence Agency, National Geospatial Intelligence Agency, and more.

This Career Event is held in conjunction with Counterterrorism Since 9/11, an expert panel featuring former CIA Director John Brennan, former Commander of U.S. Special Operations Command Adm. (ret) William McRaven, former NSC and State Department official Farah Pandith and former National Counterterrorism Center Director Nicholas Rasmussen. The panel discussion begins at 12:15 pm at the Etter-Harbin Alumni Center. Seating for this event is limited. Registration is required for the panel and does not guarantee admission.

Prof. Dev. : International Affairs Fellowship

The IAF Program is only open to mid-career professionals who have a demonstrated commitment to a career in foreign policy. The program welcomes applicants from a broad range of professional, academic, and personal backgrounds. Although a PhD is not a requirement, selected fellows generally hold an advanced degree and possess a strong record of work experience as well as a firm grounding in the field of foreign policy. The program does not fund pre- or postdoctoral research, work toward a degree, or the completion of projects on which substantial progress has been made prior to the fellowship period. Qualified candidates must be U.S. citizens.

The duration of the fellowship is twelve months, preferably beginning in September. The program awards a stipend of $100,000.

For those seeking to spend the fellowship year in the U.S. government, CFR will work with the fellow to identify a U.S. government agency willing to serve as a host. The placement is made at the discretion of the host agency and is contingent on the fellow’s successfully obtaining a security clearance, which is granted solely by the U.S. government.

For those seeking to spend the fellowship year at an international organization or an academic institution, CFR will work with the fellow to identify an organization willing to serve as a host. The placement is made at the discretion of the host organization. A security clearance may not be required.

Prof. Dev.: Open Research Laboratory (Illinois)

REEEC is now accepting applications from regional specialists (including advanced graduate students, faculty, independent scholars, and library science or other professionals with appropriate qualifications) to conduct short-term research concerning all aspects of Russian, eastern European, and Eurasian studies in conjunction with the fall Open Research Laboratory (ORL), which will take place from September 1–30. Those applicants who are US citizens and whose research holds relevance for US foreign policy may also apply for US Department of State Title VIII fellowships to support their visits.

WHAT THE LAB OFFERS:Full access to the physical and electronic collections of the University of Illinois Library.Use of the Library’s technological resources, including advanced scanning equipment and other resources.Consultations with the Slavic Reference Service.Opportunities to participate in REEEC programming (lectures, workshops, conferences, etc.).The help of REEEC staff in answering logistical questions related to your stay.Informal meetings with local scholars as desired.

FINANCIAL AID: US DEPARTMENT OF STATE TITLE VIII FELLOWSHIPS
Applicants who are U.S. citizens and who are conducting policy-relevant research may apply for a Title VIII fellowship to support their visits. These fellowships provide: A housing award furnishing accommodation on campus for up to 5 days,A travel award of up to $500 to offset transportation costs to and from Urbana-Champaign,A stipend of $500 to cover food, incidentals, and other costs associated with the research visit.

Podcast: The Slavic Connexion

“The Slavic Connexion” from The University of Texas at Austin

This semester, students from the UT Slavic Department launched a new podcast called The Slavic Connexion. Each week the students, lead by grad student/filmmaker Michelle Daniel and hosted by grad students Thomas Rehnquist and Matthew Orr, and undergrads Milena Djordjevic-Kisacanin and Lauren Nyquist, take turns interviewing UT faculty, students and visiting speakers to the Department. The podcast is a fresh international chat show meant to share research, ideas, and culture in digestible episodes within and between academic institutions globally.

RUSSIAN LITERATURE WEEK 2019 presents a series of conversations featuring Russia’s acclaimed new authors, famed translators of Russian fiction, and leading Russian literature scholars and critics.  RUSSIAN LITERATURE WEEK 2019 will take place May 20-24 in literary venues across New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC – and, as always, online.
